The Lab Assistant is a crucial part of keeping the lab running smoothly. Lab Assistants are responsible for preparing for the lab in advance, assisting students in performance of their labs, promoting safety in the lab and maintaining the lab.

Preparing for the lab in advance - 25%

A) Read the experimental procedure, any lab assistant instructions and any other special information that is provided by the course instructor or laboratory coordinator
B) Ask the course instructor or lab coordinator to answer any questions regarding the procedure, set-up, and/or safety concerns before the designated lab time.

Assisting students in performance of their labs - 25%
A) Answer questions in a way that tries to guide students through the process so they can develop answers themselves.
B) Check set-ups, and coach students through the proper techniques as necessary.'
     Demonstrate techniques and tricks you have learned through your own experience (as long as they are proper and safe!)'
C) Circulate around the room, making yourself available to ALL students so that each feels they may ask questions freely. Show no favoritism!

Promoting safety in the lab - 25%
A) Be alert for unsafe behavior, practices, set-ups, and situations. Correct them or bring them to the attention of the instructor immediately.'
B) Assist students in remembering that food and beverages are not allowed in the lab at any time. If they want to keep their water bottle in their backpack, that is OK. But they      may not have it out and open in the lab.

Maintaining the lab - 25%
A) Leave the lab either ready for the next class, or assist in putting away all materials if it is the last lab.
B) Keep the floor and pathways clear of equipment.
C) Look around and throw away all stray paper and/or other trash. Ask the instructor or lab coordinator if unsure about what to do with any specific item.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Students should have earned an A or B in the course matching the assigned duties.
Preferred Educational Qualifications
Students must have completed and earned a grade in the course for which they are serving as a lab assistant.

SKILLS
Need to be able to effectively use a phone and computer, specialized lab equipment as encountered during the course.
