Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland’s Office of Student Financial Services & Cashiering (SFSC) is seeking a Student Financial Specialist for the service center. The primary objective of the Office of SFSC includes the billing, payments, collections, refunds, third party scholarships, tax information, and general questions relating to the financial account of university students and its associates.
The Student Financial Specialist is an integral part of the Financial Services Center and is responsible for responding to student account and financial inquiries; assessing the needs of students, parents, and external departments in determining the most appropriate customer service and account action needed. This position will resolve customer issues in a timely and professional manner, reducing the need for managerial escalations. Extensive interaction in person, via phone, and email including writing professional correspondence to customers and the student body is required. 
The Student Financial Specialist must demonstrate strong organizational skills, and attention to detail. They must also exhibit excellent written and oral communication, as well as analytical skills with the ability to explain both simple and complex financial issues. This position requires the ability to work effectively and respectfully with students, staff and faculty from diverse cultures, backgrounds and identity groups. The Student Financial Specialist must also demonstrate the ability to work under pressure and sustain a high level of productivity and professionalism, and must be comfortable with periodic public speaking.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
Four years related experience in customer service or financial operations preferably in a higher education environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • General knowledge of collections techniques and the laws pertaining to debt collection.
  • Working knowledge of techniques used in collecting, compiling, and organizing data and information; of office automation software and its application.
  • Ability to apply basic analytical skills; to perform mathematical computations; to make group presentations; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Other:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

  • Professional experience in higher education and/or in accounts receivables is preferred but not required.

Physical Demands
Normal office environment with extensive computer use. Must be able to clearly read computer screen, and type, for extended periods. Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling common office items such as supplies, files and documented materials.
