Job Summary

The Student Disability Specialist supports two critical areas: support to students with disabilities and support and consultation for faculty, staff, and clinical sites who work with our students.

The Student Disability Specialist, under the direction of the SDS Co-Directors, is responsible for evaluating and determining disability and accommodations and the comprehensive and timely coordination and delivery of accommodations to UCSF students with disabilities. The Student Disability Specialist will support SDS Co-Directors as one of the primary resources to educate, train, and assist in guiding the UCSF schools in understanding disability access, rights and responsibilities. The Student Disability Specialist will also interface regularly with faculty, and provide ongoing technical assistance to campus partners regarding the University's obligations to students with disabilities under applicable Federal and State regulations. Responsibilities of the Student Disability Specialist include, but are not limited to: student advocacy, determination and provision of accommodations, site assessments, accessibility problem solving, note-taking services, alternate format materials and assistive technology equipment and software loans, CART and sign-language interpreting services, as well as departmental and collaborative outreach.

Department Description

The mission of the Student Disability Services program is to ensure that students with disabilities have an equitable opportunity to participate in educational programs at UCSF in accordance with Federal law (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; Americans with Disabilities Act), state law, and University of California policies applying to non-discrimination based on a disability.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree (MA/MS or higher) in Education, Special Education, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or related field, or equivalent experience
• 3 years or more of related experience
• Experience in working with health science and medical education students and challenges with implementing accommodations in both academic, lab and clinical settings         
• Strong knowledge of the legal framework involving accommodations for students with disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations
• Thorough knowledge of procedures for assessing and determining disability accommodation issues, including compliance procedures
• Thorough knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques used to determine appropriate supports and equitable access
• Demonstrated multi-cultural competence and ability to work with a diverse population   
• Demonstrated skill and ability to work effectively, independently, with diverse groups, as part of a team and collaborating with colleagues     
• Knowledge, skill, and experience in working with university students who have been diagnosed as having disability-related access barriers   
• Experience implementing assistive technology in an educational setting  
• Strong knowledge of disability case law

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with presenting, national level preferred
