Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Student Counselor (Academic Advisor & Student Success Counselor) for the Mason Gross School of the Arts. This position reports to Assistant Dean for Advising and Student Success within the Office of Student Success and works in close coordination with the leadership of the Art & Design and Filmmaking programs
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Serves as the primary advisor for students pursuing Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Visual Art, Design, and Filmmaking, as well as declared minors in these areas.
  • Provides holistic support to students throughout their degree programs, offering counseling to ensure accurate and timely course registration and scheduling, academic success, personal wellness, career exploration, and related matters, and connecting students to such university resources as the Office of Financial Aid; Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program & Psychiatric Services (CAPS); and the New Brunswick Dean of Students Office.
  • Works in close collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Advising and Student Success and with Advisors across Mason Gross to provide career advising and professional development opportunities to students.
  • Reviews and evaluates students’ records to assist with course selection and planning, consideration of routes to academic and artistic success, and preparation for students’ post-graduate careers.
  • Develops detailed, timely graduation plans that empower students to set goals and achieve success and to develop skills as leaders and contributors to their academic and artistic communities, culminating in students’ on-time graduation and preparation for future careers and educational paths.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related artistic discipline.
  • Two (2) years of relevant, post-graduate experience in higher education academic counseling/advisement; or equivalent experience that demonstrates knowledge of student advising and counseling.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience working with a diverse cohort of students, including first-generation college students, students with disabilities, and international students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and highly developed oral and written communication skills; electronic and digital skills sufficient to engage with students in a virtual environment.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively with all levels of employees across the organization.
  • The ability to empathize, demonstrate patience, assist students facing sensitive personal issues, and defuse potentially contentious situations.
  • The ability to work with or quickly learn student information databases and systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in higher education affairs.
  • Advanced understanding of and experience in the visual arts and/or filmmaking.
