Position Summary
The Student Copy Editor will help the Editor and Assistant Editor in the production of the Optometric Clinical Practice Journal.Student Copy Editor reports to Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
Essential Functions
  • Review submitted manuscripts for grammatical accuracy, adherence to AMA citation style, formatting, predatory publishing, and copyright.
  • Flag inconsistencies and notify senior editors of necessary adjustments to submitted manuscripts before publication.
  • Copy edit the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry published Optometric Clinical Practice Journal.
  • Ensure submitted manuscripts are formatted per journal requirements, adhere to AMA citation style, and screen references for predatory published works.
  • Procure and submitting accurate metadata for each manuscript to be published. Assigning all digital object identifiers, managing, and clearing reports with the third party international publishers linking association, dba CrossRef.
  • Keep accurate reports of all downloads and other reports that publishing software offers publishing team. Attend editorial staff meetings.
  • Work and communicate with editorial staff throughout the publication process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrate (writing, editing, design, etc.)
  • Good grammar skills, knowledge of Associated Press style and photography skills
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University.
Required Education
  • Be a full time UIW student during the 2024-2025 academic year.
  • Have a minimum GPA 2.5, with a 3.0 in the major discipline.
Required Work Experience
No required work experience necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference given to students and previous journalistic experience (newspaper, yearbook, magazine, anthology, broadcasting class, website, journal, etc).
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
None.
Work Hours
Seasonal, up to twenty hours per week based on student availability.
Physical Demands
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
