POSITIONOBJECTIVE

The Student Advocate for Gender Based Violence will provide advocacy for undergraduate, graduate and professional students affected by sexual and gender-based violence, as well as coordinate advocacy for the Case Western Reserve University by community agencies and provide some advocacy awareness programming. Sexual and gender-based violence refers to any act that is perpetrated against a person¿s will and is based on gender norms and unequal power relationships. It encompasses threats of violence and coercion. It can be physical, emotional, psychological, or sexual in nature. The student advocate is a confidential resource for students. 

 

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS 

  • Provide individual confidential advocacy to students affected by sexual or gender-based violence including sexual misconduct, intimate partner violence, and stalking. Provide assistance navigating campus and community resources to ensure students affected by sexual violence can access campus and community resources. Provide support during formal reporting and response processes. (60%)
  • Participate in the Coordinated Community Response Team, including leading relevant committees, report on advocacy need, manage partnerships with external partners and provide campus-wide awareness programing through presentations and tabling on the availability of advocacy services. (15%)
  • Participate in relevant meetings, Mather Center staff meetings, and professional development. Participate in conferences and listservs related to gender-based violence prevention, education, and advocacy to gain knowledge and best practice information. (15%)
  • Create support group curriculum and facilitate monthly survivor support groups. (6%)

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

    May supervise interns, student workers, or peer educators.

     

    CONTACTS

    Department: Continuous contact with the Director for Violence Prevention and Response in the development, planning and initiation of advocacy services, prevention education, and program evaluation. Frequent contact with the Executive Director and other staff of the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women

    University: Frequent contact with the Office of Title IX to ensure compliance with Title IX standards. Regular contact with campus police, university deans, faculty, staff and administrators to advocate and coordinate support for students dealing with sexual and gender-based violence issues as they intersect with academic issues. Occasional contact with the LGBT Center and the Office of Multicultural Affairs and other offices to support historically marginalized and underserved groups.

    External: Regular contact with community resources such as the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, SANE nurses, and Journey Center to exchange information. 

    Students: Continuous contact with students to provide advocacy, counseling and mental health services to students affected by sexual and gender-based violence. 

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Higher Education, Human Development, Public Service, Public Health, Social Sciences, or related field and 4 years of professional work experience in gender focused education or advocacy; OR Master's degree in related field and 2 years of related professional work experience required. Experience as survivor advocate in higher education, a rape crisis center, or related environment preferred.

     

    REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with intersection of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and stalking. Experience working with diverse populations in a university or college setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Title IX, Violence Against Women's Act (VAWA), and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery). 
  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including respect for all aspects of an individual's identity, ability to resolve conflict, clear personal and professional boundaries, and ability to work collegially and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team process.
  • Dependability and good work habits.
  • Must be willing to complete OAESV Advocate training if not already completed by end of orientation period. 
  • Knowledge of and adherence to relevant laws and professional standards regarding Title IX, Violence Against Women's Act (VAWA) and professional ethics and privacy. 
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Typical office locations and health and counseling clinic environment on a university campus. Full-time professional staff are exempt from overtime. The employee will participate in crisis response, outreach or psychoeducational programming outside of the usual schedule on occasion.
