Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the most important centers for global earth science research and education in the world. Supporting SIO, Shipboard Technical Support (STS) provides specialized expertise, personnel, instrumentation and support services to scientists that use oceanographic research vessels. STS provides specialized expertise, personnel, instrumentation and support services to scientists that use oceanographic research vessels. They also design, build and sells specialized equipment and instruments unavailable on the commercial market. STS is composed of groups that each provide a distinct set of services and expertise. These services include technical services on SIO vessels, specialized services on vessels within the Academic Research Fleet, and technical services on the USCGC HEALY through the Ship-based Technical Support in the Arctic program.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

In this position which reports to the Manager of Shipboard Technical Support, incumbent manages and provides oversight to all aspects of Specialized Technical Services projects within STS provided by the Shipboard Engineering Group. These services include but are not limited to the Oceanographic Data Facility group conducting repeat hydrography support, Portable Multi Channel Seismic System conducting seafloor mapping, Multiple Opening Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS) engineering support. The Shipboard Engineering Group also provides support for the design, installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair of oceanographic instrumentation systems on department supported research vessels.

The STS Specialized Services Manager is also responsible for operational management of department staff to meet the objectives of supported projects. Through subordinate supervisors and engineers, the incumbent conducts long lead time logistics planning, budget planning and review of financial expenditures. Assignments are received in the form of objectives, to which the incumbent determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Additionally, this position will provide guidance and assist the department manager to ensure all operations are conducted in accordance with department and University policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing teams of technical staff on seagoing research projects. Demonstrated experience supervising and coordinating technical personnel.

  • Experience managing sea going operations in support of oceanographic research.

  • Expert knowledge and field experience of oceanographic shipboard field practices and procedures.

  • Proven experience managing the engineering and technical aspects of research projects with deadlines and budgetary constraints.

  • Broad knowledge of Human Resources and fiscal / budgetary policies and procedures.

  • Strong skills and knowledge associated with managing research engineering projects of significance.

  • Highly effective communication and presentation skills to convey complex inf
