JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Lifecycle Engineering Department within the Materials and Manufacturing (MMO) Office of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is searching for a full time Structural Steel Engineer to join our team.  ARL/Penn State’s purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities engineering and technology needs.

The Lifecycle Engineering Department specializes in transitioning industrial technologies and industry best practices to specific DoD applications, and is looking for an engineer with experience in steel design and construction.  Project work is very diverse and will provide the opportunity to learn new skills and solve unconventional challenges.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Lead the design of steel structures

  • Act as primary technical point of contact for specialty structural subcontractors such as Naval Architecture

  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines

  • Guide less experienced engineers in design techniques

  • Specify welds and connection methods

  • Evaluate static and dynamic loading on structures

  • Generate a design using 3D modeling software

This position will be filled at the intermediate professional, advanced professional, or senior professional level. Minimally, this requires a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline; Master’s Degree preferred, and 5+ years of related experience for the advanced professional level. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Experience in static and elastic steel structure design

  • Multi-member Joint design and bolted connections

  • Specifying and detailing welds

  • 3D modeling, please specify specific modeling experience in resume.

  • Finite Element Analysis

  • Ability to lead a team of engineers and drafters to meet challenging design and program objectives.

  • Candidates should be inquisitive, proactive, and interested in learning new tools, and technologies.

  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills; be well-organized, independent, and ready to work with minimal supervision.

  • Able to work in an environment where problems are often not initially well-defined.

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Experience with offshore structures

  • Experience with overhead lifting devices

  • Ability to design, stairs, ladders, railings, and lifelines

  • Professional Engineering license

  • Experience leading the technical aspects of projects.

  • Previous DOD and classified work experience is a plus

Your work location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$86,300.00 - $191,000.00
