Physical Requirements

Field work in hot and cold weather and confined spaces. Climb hills, while carrying up to 30 lbs.

Shift

40 hours per week. Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm. This work may require occasional overnight or weekend travel.

Job Summary

This is a full-time temporary position for one year, with the possibility for extension to two years. The primary responsibilities for this position are related to maintaining seismic stations and computer systems operated by the Kentucky Geological Survey
As a field technician, this position will assist with maintenance of KSSMN seismic stations, installation, and uninstallation, and with operation of temporary projects such as seismic soundings or aftershock surveys. Additionally, this position involves examination of KSSMN recordings to assess station performance, and population and maintenance of seismic event databases. Basic operation and troubleshooting of KSSMN computer systems will also be involved.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Experience with seismic monitoring instrumentation including broadband seismometer operation; operation and maintenance of data acquisition systems; and with seismic station design or installation are preferred.
Experience with DC-powered and solar-charged systems, and basic DC-circuits, network communications systems including TCP/IP protocols and device configuration, and telemetry equipment is strongly preferred.
Soldering experience and experience with power hand-tools is preferred.
UNIX-based computer system operation is strongly preferred.
Experience with earthquake acquisition and analysis software is preferred, Earthworm and SEISAN or Antelope, in particular.
Experience preferred in seismic event analysis (i.e. source parameter determination).

Preferred Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in physics, geophysics, or seismology is strongly preferred.
