Job Summary
The STEPS Career Development Specialist will support students in exploring and planning for careers that match their interests, understanding needed skill development/ enhancement, and in establishing employment and career goals.
Responsibities include:
• Ensure students have opportunity to gain skills through internships and other college work experiences, aligned with their person-centered plan, and become better prepared to achieve their career goals.
• Support students directly in internship or practicum placements, as appropriate, to help ensure successful partnerships and foster effective communication between students and organizational contacts.
• Be knowledgeable of and implement strategies consistent with Kentucky’s Employment First law and the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.
• Ensure students have information and individual support necessary to apply for vocational rehabilitation (VR) services, as appropriate.
• Work with the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR)/ VR Counselors in identifying, planning for, and achieving vocational goals consistent with the student’s College and Career Studiest (CCS) program plan and Individualized Plan for Employment, if appropriate.
• Complete Postsecondary Transition Program Worksheet, if appropriate, for submission to the VR Counselor, pursuant to Service Fee Memorandum – Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities.
• Provide training/ TA to other entities that can support the employment and career goals of CCS Program students (developmental disability agencies, campus career and employment services, community employers).
• Establish and cultivate relationships with employers interested in engaging the talent of qualified CCS students and alumni to help meet their workforce needs, including supported employment, as appropriate.
• Assist students in researching and applying for jobs as they near completion of the program, including preparing a resume, practicing interviewing skills, etc.
• Work with the CCS Program Coordinator and evaluation staff to track and report on employment outcomes.
