The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for STEM Peer Tutors (Math, Physics, and Chemistry) for the Gainesville campus. The Peer Tutor is responsible for tutoring students in university-level courses in their specialty (Math, Physics, or Chemistry) and assisting students, faculty, and staff with all services provided by UNG tutoring centers. Peer Tutors integrate effective study and learning strategies, thereby maximizing each student's potential to become an independent learner and achieve academic success.  Tutoring primarily takes place in the ACTT Center on the Gainesville campus, with possible online tutoring duties as needed.

  • Tutor students working in math courses, especially at the 1000-level.
  • Integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
  • Complete the required 10-hour tutor training in addition to at least 25 hours of actual tutoring time, in accordance with College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification requirements.
  • Complete required documentation for sessions as instructed by your supervisor.
  • Be knowledgeable of and make appropriate referrals to other campus resources.
  • Demonstrate the use of calculators, both graphing and non-graphing, and software used in Math courses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of the ACTT Center.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Able to establish rapport and communicate well with students
  • Competency in subject area (Math, Physics, or Chemistry) with the ability to break down and explain component parts in a concise but clear manner
  • Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, faculty, staff, and the general public
  • Must be enrolled at the University of North Georgia in a minimum of six (6) credit hours to qualify as a student worker.
  • Must have earned a grade of A or B in courses you plan to cover
  • Must have and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.
  • Required recommendation from a faculty member in the department of your subject. 
  • Tutoring or mentoring experience a plus.
