Position Summary:
 
The Veterans Services Center (VSC) creates pathways to meet essential needs of military-connected students – veterans, reservists, National Guard, active duty, and their families – by helping them obtain their U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits. The VSC is the campus liaison to federal and state entities in matters related to VA education benefits for our military-connected students. Through strategic advocacy we assist military-connected students in navigating their transition to student life at UCI.
 
Using knowledge and skills as an experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention. Under the direct supervision of the Director for the Veteran Services Center (VSC), the Program Coordinator is responsible for the development and management of campus-wide programming that advances the visibility, knowledge, and transition of UCI’s military-connected community to student life. The Program Coordinator will develop strong working relationships with staff across UCI and the local community to improve support and communication for prospective and continuing military-connected students. They will assist the VSC Director on all responsibilities, including but not limited to community relations outreach with the local community, outreach with similar programs at partnering colleges and universities in the region, and holistic support for programming, events, services, and other activities. The Program Coordinator will evaluate and provide recommendations for the development and general effectiveness of VSC programs, events, and services. Lastly, the Program Coordinator will establish the marketing strategy for VSC’s programs, services, and events.

Required:
 
  • One year of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. 
  • Strong knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. 
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization. 
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. 
  • Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills. 
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. 
  • Able to create, implement, and evaluate student learning outcomes.
     

Preferred:
 
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of needs and concerns of military-connected students. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively and cooperatively with students, staff, faculty, campus administrators, and off-campus entities.

 
Special Conditions Required:
 
Some evening and weekend support required. Hybrid work schedule available based on department needs (1-2 days remote)
