Position Summary
Assists in developing and conducting research projects on space weathering and volatile-rock interactions. Tasks include sample preparation and analyses, communication of experiment results, and data archiving.
This is a time-limited position of up to 1 year.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Following instructions and discussions with principal investigator, perform sample preparation on geologic samples (e.g., create epoxy mounts, sample polishing, and characterize samples with micro-analytical techniques).
  • Develop hypotheses to be tested related to space weathering and soil alteration and devise ways of testing it.
  • Acquire, assemble, and perform analyses of data and interpret results.
  • Manage research project with other SSERVI institutions and investigators.
  • Write conference abstracts and present scientific results.
  • Prepare and submit peer-reviewed manuscripts on research results/findings. Submit regular progress reports based on research work to PI and present progress to the Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI).
  • Conduct literature searches and background reading related to research project.
  • Assist with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

May work in laboratory environment with potential exposure to chemical and laser irradiation. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment as needed and comply with University Environmental, Health, and Safety training and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related planetary science field.
  • Analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret multiple forms of data (e.g., spectral, chemical, electron probe, secondary electron microscopy).
  • Computer literacy including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data and programming.
  • Ability to communicate in oral and written form in a clear, concise manner.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of standard laboratory policies, procedures, and equipment.
  • Able to work well independently or as a team member.


Required Qualifications

PhD or master’s degree with 4 years of experience in research lab operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 9 years.
