Position Summary
A Staff Scientist position is available in Dr. Doug Chalker's group to carry out research aimed at understanding how cells maintain structural organization.
Our lab studies a non-pathogenic, ciliated protozoan called Tetrahymena and current research focuses on elucidating the role of signaling pathways that control cellular polarity. The research involves performing genetic manipulation of Tetrahymena, engineering Tetrahymena strains that can be used to generate data that test specific hypotheses. Experience in basic molecular biology techniques and working with microorganisms like Tetrahymena is highly preferred.
Our lab also maintains the national Tetrahymena Stock Center, which stores laboratory strains long-term and sends cells lines or DNA samples to researchers upon request. The individual filling this position will assist when necessary to carry out projects that the Stock Center aims to complete in a timely fashion. The individual will have opportunities to direct the work of undergraduate research assistants that support basic lab work or engage in independent research.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data.

  • Performs genetic manipulation of Tetrahymena, engineering Tetrahymena strains that can be used to generate data that test specific hypotheses. Significant time involved carrying out basic molecular biology techniques that are used in specific experiments and assays. A major part of the time involves specimen processing, collection of data, and preparation of solutions, etc., to carry out these experiments. Some set-up and maintenance of equipment is also part of the assigned tasks..

  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting. 

  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.

  • Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned, particularly those required for maintenance of the Tetrahymena Stock Center and ASSET outreach programs. 

  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects. 

  • Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.

  • Conducts literature searches related to research project.

Working Conditions

  • This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research organisms.
  • The successful applicant will need to complete basic laboratory safety training and training in shipping of research materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a STEM field.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
  • Ability to read research papers.
  • Familiarity with sterile microbiological technique skills.
  • Knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction, and Reverse Transcription.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Ability or desire to learn how to update databases and webpages associated with the stock center.
  • Eager to learn and welcome new challenges.
  • Ability to follow instructions and protocols.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Ability to efficiently execute sterile microbiological technique.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and helpful attitude to train a vibrant and diverse user base.
  • Self-motivated and driven to initiate and maintain the excellent operation of the TSC.
  • Working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Word and Excel and willingness to learn database management.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to improve written and oral communication.


Required Qualifications

PhD or master’s degree with 4 years of experience in research lab operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 9 years.

Salary Range
$47,000.00 - $85,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
