Job Summary

The overall purpose of this job in the trauma/general surgery laboratory is under supervision to facilitate the maintenance of lab equipment and facilities, order lab supplies and work with supply chain management, strategize purchasing options, oversee and administer a safe work environment that is in compliance with University standards, maintain and organize laboratory records, sort/organize/aliquot biological specimens, prepare and ship biological specimens, update and maintain sample databases, coordinate schedules of laboratory research staff, and assist in performance of basic experiments focused on coagulation and inflammatory biology after trauma, critical illness, and COVID-19, as needed under close technical supervision by staff scientists.

Department Description

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. The Department is comprised of multiple divisions and sections and our surgeons provide care at locations throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Our Residents and Fellows also play a critical role in Department’s success. The Department of Surgery Chair’s Office is an extremely high profile, fast paced environment with a very diverse range of contacts and needs which require an immediate and accurate response, handled with confidentiality, and while staying compliant. The Chair's Office is responsible for management, direction and oversight of over 400 faculty (clinical and research), trainees and staff personnel.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience or in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; especially when collaborating with other researchers and research staff.
  • Knowledge of cell and molecular biology techniques acquired in school.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.Sc. degree in Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience or a related science
  • One or more years of recent, directly related work experience with basic techniques or methods required by the position
  • Previous experience in lab research
  • Previous experience in lab research with human tissues and blood samples
  • Experience with cell and molecular biology techniques
  • Ability to work independently
  • Working knowledge of university procurement procedures
