Job Summary


The Metcalfe Lab in the UCSF Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General and Pride Hall is seeking a highly motivated Staff Research Associate to work as part of a research team investigating new tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics and drug-resistance. The SRA will be involved in 1) Generating a Mycobacterium tuberculosis deletion mutant and its complements to investigate the impact of specific mutations of bedaquiline resistance, and 2) developing methods for the efficient lysis, DNA extraction, and amplification of Mycobacteria to develop a novel, rapid drug susceptibility testing assays.

Department Description

The Metcalfe Lab in the UCSF Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General, is focused on TB diagnostics and drug resistance, and how leveraging understanding of the fundamental biology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis can be used for better tuberculosis treatments.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Experience with the basic techniques or methods required by the position or an equivalent combination
  • Experience with standard microbiology procedures such as media preparation, culturing, DNA extraction, etc.
  • Basic molecular biology techniques including PCR and cloning
  • Experience working in a BSL-2

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related science and experience with the basic techniques or methods required by the position
  • Experience working in a BSL-3
  • Knowledge of how to handle clinical specimens
  • Experience with small animal work
