Job Summary

Staff Research Associate (SRA): Research Associate position for the Clelland Lab at UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. The goal of the Clelland lab is develop novel therapies for neurodegenerative diseases such as dementias and ALS. Project will focus on outcome of CRISPR gene editing in iPSC derived cells, advanced sequencing techniques and developing new analytic tools to analyze DNA and RNA sequencing and CRISPR editing outcomes. This position will include the development of novel assays and analytic tools. Strong communication skills and a background in molecular biology and data science or computer science required. Applicants intending on progressing to graduate or medical school are encouraged to apply. A college degree required and laboratory experience in wet lab or data science/computer science required.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is a clinical research unit within the UCSF Department of Neurology that investigates the clinical (neurological, cognitive, behavioral, neuroanatomic) characteristics of various neurodegenerative diseases. The Primary Investigator’s (PI) research within the MAC focuses on the decision-making processes in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Alzheimer's Disease (AD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and other neurodegenerative disorders.


Required Qualifications

SRA I :  

  • BA/BS degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

SRA II :
  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Laboratory experience OR computational/coding/data science.

  • Background in molecular biology

  • Longitudinal lab-based experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis, system programming, database design, and data security measures.
  • Strong analytical and consultation skills.
  • Effective communication of complex information, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, Java, SQL, Ruby, JavaScript (and TypeScript), and C.
  • Familiarity with tools and libraries, which may include Spark, PyTorch, Jupyter/DataSpell, NumPy, SciPy, pandas, xarray, scikit-learn, statsmodels, Matplotlib, Seaborn, CARTO (GIS), and Excel.
  • Hands-on experience with whole genome sequencing data sets and VCF files.
