Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate will be expected to enroll in a collaborative research effort using animal models of epilepsy to elucidate mechanisms underlying the development of this disease in order to identify novel targets for epilepsy treatment and prevention. The candidate will perform laboratory functions under the supervision of a Faculty Member and an SRA 4, and include: daily monitoring, maintenance and breeding of rodents; stereotaxic brain surgeries involving implants of electrodes for EEG recording; monitoring of and scoring behavioral seizures; collection and analysis of EEG data; intraperitoneal injections; preparation of solutions; molecular biology and histological techniques; and laboratory maintenance (cleaning of glassware, autoclaving, stocking supplies).

Some of the duties associated with this position entail activities to be performed in confined spaces. The incumbent will be required to sit or stand for extended period of time while performing surgeries and/or scoring behavioral seizures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A/BS degree in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Biology, Bioengineering or a related field;
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience working in an animal research-based wet lab, preferably in the academic settings.
  • Proficiency in rodent’s husbandry, care and handling;
  • Proficiency in preparing solutions, reagents, cleaning glassware, maintaining supplies inventory;
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Ability to collaborate with other Research Staff and principal investigators working on related
  • Knowledge and understanding best practices to maintain research records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the fabrication of implants for EEG recording;
  • Prior training in stereotaxic surgery in rodents;
  • Ability to perform surgery for implantation of electrodes for EEG recording;
  • Familiarity with seizure analysis in EEG recordings;
  • Tissue harvesting and sectioning;
  • Immunohistochemistry and microscopy;
  • Basic molecular biology (PCR) and biochemical (Western blot) technique.

Department Description

The Department of Neurology is a clinical, research, and academic department within the UC Davis School of Medicine. The research responsibilities include promotion and support of basic science, translational, and clinical research programs by the faculty members. The clinical responsibilities involve both inpatient and outpatient services. Faculty members provide both clinical and didactic teaching as part of the academic responsibilities of the Department. There are approximately 60 faculty members (PhD and MD) and over 100 staff employees located at three sites (Sacramento, Davis, and Walnut Creek).

Work Environment

This is a 100% on site position. General work hours are Mon-Fri 8hrs/day. Occasional long hours and/or weekends will be required based on laboratory and department needs.
