OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center is Oklahoma’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Center, and one of only 72 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers in the United States. This highly competitive accreditation ensures that our patients receive the highest standard of care and have access to the most advanced cancer treatment options.

The Stephenson Cancer Center is now hiring for a full-time Staff Research Assistant. This is an OUHSC position, but will be located in Tulsa.

The successful candidate will work as a Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC) team member within the Oliver Lab, on multiple ongoing neuroimaging research studies focused around understanding tobacco use and other addictive behaviors as well as developing new treatments. Primary duties include managing participant recruitment, screening participants, data collection, record keeping, data entry and basic analysis, and report preparation. Opportunities for involvement with other components of the scientific process (e.g. grant and manuscript preparation) will be available based on skills and interest. Prior experience with neuroimaging research is not necessary or expected.

Duties:

  • Participates in clinical research projects collecting data from patients and/or participants in a study.
  • Collects various forms of data pertaining to the research project or projects, which could include database information and/or hard files.
  • Conducts data analyses, interprets data, draws conclusions, and discusses with principal investigator.
  • Gathers EKGs, conducts blood draws and obtains other biological specimens
  • Administers medications and assists in conducting MRI scans
  • Keeps detailed logs of all research related projects or activities. Conduct literature searches.
  • Prepares various reports containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content that may be submitted for publication. 
  • Collaborates with other researchers or colleagues across multiple institutions.
  • Participates in meetings and presents research findings to fellow researchers and Principal Investigator.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
 

Job Requirements

Department Preferences:

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology, Public Health or other healthcare-related fields.
  • 12 months experience conducting human laboratory-based, clinical or social sciences research (e.g., psychology lab, clinical research, etc.) with human participants
  • Experience with MRI, EEG, EKG and/or phlebotomy is ideal, but not expected
  • Experience with basic data management and analysis using Excel, SPSS, SAS, R or related tools.
  • Computer/statistical programming experience is ideal, but not expected

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science, Chemistry, or Physical Science or related field AND:

  • 12 months research laboratory experience.

Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months equivalent experience in lieu of the Bachelor's Degree for a total of 60 months research experience or an Associate's Degree and 24 months research experience for a total of 36 months experience.

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of how to safely handle and dispose of biohazardous materials or chemicals following Federal, State, and University regulations and guidelines.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability to analyze data and keep records.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge and experience in research methods, including clinical trial data collection procedures and IRB processes.
  • Individual must complete an MRI Safety Screening form and be cleared to safely work with the MRI prior to hiring

Working Conditions:

  • Physical: Standing for prolonged periods. Manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Reaching, bending, and stooping.
  • Environmental: Laboratory Environment. Exposure to biohazardous materials, chemicals, odors, and/or carcinogens.
