Seasonal Nurse Position at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)

The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) in Pellston, Michigan is seeking a highly qualified, dedicated Nurse for the upcoming 2024 field season (May 20 - August 10). Our residential field station is committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for a diverse community of students, faculty, researchers, and visiting groups immersed in ecological studies and field research in Northern Michigan. Responsibilities*
  • Administer first aid and manage emergency care situations, including referral to off-site healthcare providers as needed.
  • Provide mental health support and guidance to individuals in the camp community.
  • Handle the ordering, stocking, and maintenance of all medical supplies and equipment.
  • Keep detailed and confidential health records for participants.
  • Develop health and safety protocols in collaboration with UMBS administration.
  • Educate residents on health-related matters, such as preventive health practices and emergency response protocols.
  • Monitor and assess the ongoing health needs of the station and recommend improvements or changes to health and safety policies.

Required Qualifications*
  • Current Michigan Nursing License or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional nursing or EMT experience.
  • Experience in emergency room, urgent care, public health, school nursing, or a similar environment is preferred.
  • Ability to work autonomously with strong decision-making skills.
  • Compassionate, patient-oriented approach to care.
  • Cultural sensitivity and a commitment to providing a respectful and inclusive environment for all community members.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions and diverse needs within a residential setting.

Additional Information

Position will run from May 20 - August 10, 2024 (the end date is flexible), schedule is up to 40 hours/week with morning and evening hours and some on-call duties.  Private housing and meals will be provided at the UMBS Pellston campus during the appointment. Hourly pay rate is $30 - $35.  


Background Screening

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.  Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
