Description:

Position Summary Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

Demonstrates in-depth clinical knowledge, skills and expertise
Provides direct patient care
Performs ongoing assessment of assigned patients’ and their significant others’ learning needs and identifies changes in patients’ condition
Assimilates information from multiple sources and implements appropriate action plan to provide safe, quality care
Assures safety and security of patients, significant others and staff
Ensures the appropriate implementation of the patient’s plans of care and facilitates communication among multidisciplinary team members regarding patient status
Implements appropriate actions to respond to needs of patients and patients’ significant others
Monitors and documents the patient’s condition during and post Endoscopy procedures
Assures cost effective approach to patient care in terms of equipment, supplies and other resources
In all areas of practice follows established policies, procedures and standards of care
Participates in quality improvement activities and identifies quality issues
Recognizes and responds to age appropriate needs and behaviors of all patients and utilizes knowledge in planning and interventions
Assists in various procedures such as colonoscopies, endoscopies, and other diagnostic tests as directed by physician
Advocates for patients and their significant others, coworkers, community and the nursing profession.

Assumes responsibility for meeting personal mandatory requirements: current Illinois license as a Registered Professional Nurse, CPR Certification, TB compliance, mandatory educational in-services, and other programs,
Participates in Continuous quality improvement data collection.
Approaches complex interpersonal relationships in a manner which will avoid antagonism and/or unnecessary conflict to reach resolution.
Serves as a role model and encourages professional accountability in others.
Gastroenterology nurses educate patients on their conditions, treatment options, and necessary lifestyle modifications. They provide information on medications, diet changes, and self-care practices to help patients manage their gastrointestinal health effectively
Supports UI Health and Endoscopy Services Mission, Philosophy and goals.
Utilizes established communication channels to resolve work related problems.
Interviews prospective employees as requested.
Ensures that the environment is clean, attractive, safe and free from hazards for patients, staff and visitors.
Understands and demonstrates principles of UI Health Values.
Works cooperatively with all members of the health care team including patients, their families and significant others.
Administer medications and monitor conscious sedation during procedures to ensure patient comfort and safety. Closely monitor the patient’s sedation levels, vital signs, and response to medications
Collaborates with clinical instructors and Clinical Practice Specialists to identify, promote and provide positive learning experiences for nursing students
Provides orientation to new employees in collaboration with the Endoscopy leadership team
Ensures and supports research efforts conducted within the Hospital & Clinics
Ensures that patients are clinically stable before discharge and provide them with comprehensive discharge instructions. Educate patients on post-procedure care, potential complications to watch for, and when to seek medical attention.
Put stock away in appropriate areas in a timely manner. Keep supply areas neat, clean and organized, by keeping stock off the floor and in their designated areas. Restock procedure room supplies.
Assess and address pain levels, administer appropriate pain medications, and monitor the patient’s response to pain management interventions
Performs pre-procedure assessment. Review pre-procedure patient information, including H&P, medications, allergies.
Thorough knowledge of and ability to implement principles of aseptic technique. Knowledge of basic infection control practices
Knowledge of endoscopy instruments and equipment to include the use, handling and care, especially of endoscopy equipment.
Perform processing & high level disinfection of routine & complex endoscopes and high level disinfection or non-disposable equipment.
Perform equipment inventory at required intervals. Notifies Manager of discrepancies/problems. Monitor equipment received and transferred out of department. Arrange repair of equipment through Clinical Engineering. Make arrangements for loaner equipment in conjunction with the supervisor.
Operate equipment for processing and high level disinfection of equipment including performing daily quality control and maintains accurate documentation.
Assists in setting up and cleaning of procedure rooms; coordinate the proper equipment setup to ensure smooth functioning of procedure room; assist with transportation/positioning of patients as needed.
Performs bedside pre-cleaning of endoscopy scopes and equipment
Maintain and assist with operation of endoscope towers and image recording systems to ensure proper documentation of procedures.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
    • Days with variable start times, flex
    • BSN required.
    • RN License required.
    • ACLS required.
    • Two (2) years’ experience in pre and post procedural recovery required.
    • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, families and health care providers.
    • Basic computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training.
    • Ability to work independently and as a part of the Endoscopy team.
    • Ability to interpret hospital and departmental policies and procedures and apply standards consistently.
    • Ability to articulate the Endoscopy RN’s role in the delivery of patient care.
    • Independently motivated self-starter and highly organized.
    • Clinical knowledge and understanding of Endoscopy procedures.
    • Ability to operate Endoscopy Lab equipment.


    Preferred Qualifications

     2 years’ experience with GI procedures (preferred)
