Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. Moreover, the division seeks to contribute to the development of the whole individual by fostering in each student a deeper appreciation of the importance of life-long learning, individual responsibility, and human diversity. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.
The purpose of the Center for Counseling & Student Development is to assist students in making the most of their opportunities for academic and personal development while attending the university. The Center offers personal counseling and psychiatric services to enrolled students. In addition to individual therapy, group therapy, workshops, crisis intervention, case management and consultative services are also available. All enrolled students are able to access the services provided by the center without charge beyond what has been paid in tuition and fees.
Job Duties
Staff Counselors employed by the Center for Counseling and Student Development provide therapeutic and developmental services to enrolled students at East Carolina University. Staff Counselors report to either the Director or Assistant Director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development.
Position Duties:
Counseling individuals and groups regarding personal, social, career and academic development.
Provide crisis intervention services including consultation, evaluation, counseling, referral, and follow-up. These services include rotating coverage of daytime emergency crisis services and after-hours on call for evenings, weekends and holidays.
Plan, conduct and evaluate outreach programs and services designed to facilitate student development and work cooperatively with university colleagues in developing and implementing quality programs.
Participate in ongoing evaluative procedures of Center programs and services.
Participate in ongoing professional development through in-service education programs conducted in the center, on campus, and/or professional organizations.
Provide supervision to graduate level trainees and/or, when appropriate, to staff counselors for licensure in their relevant discipline
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree required in counseling, social work, psychology or marriage and family therapy, or terminal degree in other appropriate human services field; Eligibility for state licensure and/or certification in respective professional field
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Doctoral degree preferred in: counseling, social work, psychology or marriage and family therapy, or terminal degree in other appropriate human services field; Demonstrated experience and expertise in short-term counseling; Demonstrated interest in and experience working with college students including diverse and/or underrepresented college student populations; Demonstrated ability in outreach programming; Demonstrated consultation skills; Knowledge of current research in the field of psychology, counseling and college student development; Experience working with clients in one or more of the following the areas of: eating disorders, sexual assault, trauma, LGBTQ concerns, veterans’ issues, and men’s issues and/or experience in provision of DBT-informed treatment preferred
