Department Description

Be part of an internationally recognized and accredited laboratory that provides expert DNA testing for various animal species. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory provides animal parentage verification, identification, forensics services, genetic diagnostics, and genetic research for a broad range of domestic species as well as primates and wildlife species. We are looking for a representative to work in this non-profit laboratory that is part of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and strives to provide highly accurate DNA testing for animals while also promoting education and scientific advancement in animal genetics.

**VGL is currently located on the Davis campus but will be relocating to AggieSquare on the UC Davis Sacramento campus ~ Summer of 2025.



Job Summary

Under supervision, serve in the PCR and Gel Analysis section of the Veterinary Genetics Lab, as a gel analyst of genetic data generated by other VGL sections for species including but not limited to: dog, cat, horse, goat, pig, cattle, alpaca, elk, sheep and other species. Performs DNA genotype analysis, and interface with the sample preparation, PCR, and parentage analysis groups. Performs DNA fragment analysis for parentage verification and diagnostic testing using VGL’s STRand DNA software for all species tested. Interact with all sections within the VGL (sample receiving/processing, analysis, IT, test development, and research). This gel analyst position focuses on accurately providing genotype data generated by other sections using computational programs developed in house. There is no animal handing involved in this position.

Budgeted Salary Range: Initial placement will be between $25.75 - $26.35/Hour, commensurate with educational background and relevant working experience.

4-WEEK RECRUITMENT PERIOD: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical Demands: Sitting – Constantly; Sit at a computer desk for extended periods of time.
  • Lifting Requirements: Lift/maneuver up to 40 lbs. of laboratory supplies and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       Part-time to full-time work from home (based upon the needs of the VGL) can be anticipated.

·       Additionally, adaptability to a fluctuating workload is required: must be able to work flexible hours including the possibility of working weekends as needs require; vacations must be scheduled at times when caseload is light.

·       Work in a secured animal facility (Armstrong Tract).

·       Share workspace with constant interruptions and changing noise levels.

·       Must conform to federal, state and county regulation for safe handling of biological materials.

·       Requires adaptability to fluctuating workloads based on business needs including working off hours work shifts.

·       Vacations must be scheduled with maintaining continuity of data generation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience visualizing genetic data and skills to understand anomalies in simple Mendelian traits.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Strict attention to detail and skill to operate precision electronic equipment, and computers quickly, safely, and accurately.

·       Skill to interpret PCR issues in fluorescent based genotyping data.

·       Skill to communicate effectively with laboratory personnel, students, and scientists both in written and oral form.

·       Skill to establish priorities and adapt to fluctuating workloads.

·       Skill to work with a diverse group of people and in a team-oriented environment.

·       Skill to perform detailed procedures quickly and to accurately follow detailed protocols under minimal supervision.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience in a high-throughput service laboratory and the ability to generate results quickly and accurately.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge of microsatellite DNA markers in general and the specific characteristics and variations of the common markers used by the VGL.

·       Skill to detect abnormal DNA fragment analysis results and technical expertise to establish a proper course of evaluation.

·       Skill in the use of computer software including VGL’s in-house DNA fragment analysis software (STRand) and the data management system.
