The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarships, Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR), has a job opportunity for a seasoned Sr. Veterinary Technician to work at the Medical Campus.


CORE JOB SUMMARY                                                                                                     

The Sr. Veterinary Technician assists in managing staff that tend to the health of all assigned animals residing at the university. Specifically, the Sr. Veterinary Technician ensures the safety and well-being of the animals while complying with applicable rules and regulations. Works independently, interacts, and communicates effectively with members of the husbandry and veterinary staff to include Principal Investigators and their research staff. Assists in major surgeries and performs minor procedures, administer treatments, monitors animal health, and maintains equipment, supplies, and associated records.  Maintains a significant responsibility for ensuring regulatory compliance and record keeping with both internal and external regulatory agencies.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS       

  • Assists in major surgeries, performs minor procedures, and monitors final disposition of animals.

  • Administers routine medical treatment to animals.

  • Oversees incoming and outgoing animal shipments and assesses the health of and necessary treatments for the animals.

  • Supports physical examination schedules, participates in and organizes regular health screening for long-term animals.

  • Ensures that medical records are accurate and complete.

  • Supervises inventory and assists with the purchase of medical equipment.

  • Provides pre/intra/post-operative care and anesthetic monitoring on patient(s).

  • Reviews and approves all animal transfers within the facilities.

  • Acts as lead in Rodent Health Surveillance or USDA procedures.

  • Conducts inventory, ordering, and dispensing of controlled substances for investigators.

  • Serves as liaison to the supervisor and veterinarians to troubleshoot emergency situations that may arise or in supervisor’s absence.

  • Writes, reviews, and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as directed.

  • May be required to oversee rodent colony management and delegate associated tasks.

  • Leads the veterinary technicians and assistants in their area of focus, trainings, and ensures follow through on task assignments, service requests, and all obligations.

  • Responsible for the training of Principal Investigators (PIs) and research teams and maintenance of training logs.

  • Coordinates treatment schedules and assignments and administers routine and prescribed medical treatment to clinical cases and animals in quarantine including tuberculosis testing and serology, as directed.

  • May assist in specific scheduled animal transfers and prepares health certificates for veterinary signatures.

  • Prepares, reviews, and maintains appropriate logs and medical records for accuracy and completeness of all tasks and assignments and informs the supervisor and respective personnel of any discrepancies found.

  • Responsible for processing and submission of veterinary billing for sponsors and investigators.

  • Assist in staff schedules (daily, weekends, call-outs, sentinels, etc.).

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                                                                

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Technology, or related field is preferred.

Certification and Licensing:

Credentialed Veterinary Technician (e.g., CVT, LVT, RVT) highly preferred. AALAS certification such as Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in animal use research or laboratory animal medicine. Experience in clinical veterinary medicine is highly preferred. Must have experience and strong technical skills and knowledge in surgical assistance, anesthetic administration, maintenance, and monitoring. Knowledge and understanding of veterinary terminology required. Designation as Essential Personnel required. Any appropriate combination of relevant education/or work experience may be considered.

Must be able to lift/carry/push/pull 50 lbs without assistance.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Must be able to multi-task and have time management skills.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

  • Knowledge and proficiency with basic veterinary techniques for animals in a research setting, such as SQ, IM, IP, IV, IC, bleeds, retro-orbital injections, oral gavage, cardiac puncture, phlebotomy, and intravenous catheter placement.

  • Knowledge of the behavior, care, handling/restraint and care of each common laboratory animal species. 

  • Competency in veterinary medicine technical medicine, triage, and acute clinical troubleshooting. 

  • Personnel management experience is desirable. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and attention to detail are required. 

  • Understanding of how to operate and troubleshoot major equipment in DVR operating rooms.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and office software

  • Must demonstrate a level of clear communication both in email correspondences and in person.
