The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a full time Sr. Research Data Manager for the Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Data management (BEAD) Core in the division of General Pediatrics to lead data science for research projects. BEAD Core is a leader in providing research support services to faculty investigators and their trainees. The research support helps to advance careers and deliver cutting edge innovative science. The successful candidate will be working directly with multiple site Principal Investigators (PIs) and acting as a primary liaison to Data Coordinating Centers (DCCs) and funding agencies, such as the NIH. The role also includes oversight and guidance in the ongoing day-to-day management of research studies from design to implementation to final analyses. The activities include overseeing and at times conducting data management, biostatistical analyses, quality control and assurance checks, preparation of data for DSMB meetings, and interim and final reporting out to the PIs and funding agencies. Additionally, the incumbent will oversee other more junior programmer/analysts including their training in REDCap, quality control and assurance checks, deidentification of data, etc. The incumbent will interact direction with the Director of two large Centers and their leadership teams and play and essential leadership and supportive role related to data science.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Management/Supervision

  • Coordinate and ensure the timely, accurate submission of semiannual and annual progress and data reports to funding agencies on all studies. Oversee the data management, report submission and evaluation of multiple grants and ensure data quality.
  • Ensure Quality Assurance and Control checking of study data and provide feedback to study teams on the continuous improvement of study databases to ensure usefulness for ongoing decision-making as well as for study outcomes.
  • Supervises a data science including a data entry team to ensure that data is accurate and entered in a timely manner to ensure usefulness for ongoing decision-making as well as for study outcomes. Inform senior management of and advocate for the sufficient allocation of study resources to improve data science team efficiency.
  • Manage data security and confidentiality protocols to ensure compliance with Johns Hopkins institutional guidelines for secure data management.


Data Science/Reporting

  • Oversees and performs data and database management duties, performs statistical analyses, risk factor analyses, decision and cost-effective analyses. Develops study and instrument designs, produce data reports, conducts research, fulfils data requests, and provides technical assistance. Writes study-related papers, reports, and presentations.
  • Communicating directly with PIs, Co-Is, other data scientists, program managers and directors on meeting study funding agency requirements. Ensure good communication across data science teams of the BEAD Core. Ensure data science practices are as efficient as possible between these programs.
  • Conduct data analysis and mapping using R, Stata, SAS and where appropriate, ARC GIS or other appropriate statistical software for study analyses.
  • Lead and/or assist with program evaluation activities for grants and contracts, as needed.
  • Generate reports for PIs, Co-Is and study team members from REDCap or other statistical software, as needed.
  • Remaining up to date on best practices related to STD/HIV prevention efforts. This may include travel to conferences and/or discussions with other health departments, reporting from the literature, or attending webinars.
  • Coordinating emerging data science and programming needs with other related data science staff such as REDCap expertise with the ICTR, and CCDA analysts with the ICTR, etc.
  • Provide significant contributions to scientific manuscripts and other scholarly products; may include primary or co-authorship on scholarly products.
  • Other duties as determined by the leadership of the BEAD Core.



Additional Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of at least one statistical program (R, Stata, SAS) required.
  • Knowledge of epidemiologic research methodology, epidemiologic data collection procedures, epidemiologic study design, descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of the biomedical sciences and public health.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and investigating techniques used in the epidemiology of human disease, of the methods and practices for the control of human disease and of the causes and sources of contagion of communicable human disease.
  • Ability to apply advanced epidemiologic principles and methods in analysis of health data.
  • Ability to direct epidemiologic investigations or studies.
  • Ability to understand technical and administrative problems and constraints involved in formulating disease control or prevention recommendations.
  • Ability to evaluate and interpret epidemiological and statistical data.
  • Ability to prepare and present reports and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to conduct analyses for and write up scientific manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals as primary or co-author.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, imagination, resourcefulness and sound judgement.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline. 
  • Five years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree (Masters or PhD ) degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a related field.
  • Two years of experience with each of the following: design, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological based scientific studies using R, Stata, or SAS.
  • Knowledge of SQL, REDCap ArcGIS.

Starting Salary Range: $55,200 - $96,600 Annually ($60,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
