About the Department
 

The Center for Research Informatics (CRI) is an organization within the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) that provides informatics resources and services to University faculty in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the academic medical center. Four main services comprise the CRI's operations: application development, bioinformatics, research storage and computing, and clinical research data warehousing and business intelligence. Through these service lines, the CRI enables clinical and translational research of the highest scientific merit and advances the state of the art of clinical research informatics. Job Summary
 

The incumbent will be responsible for completing data requests from the Clinical Research Data Warehouse (CRDW). This includes understanding data extractions, transformations, and loads, writing SQL code to incorporate new data sources into data warehouses and affiliated data marts, both local and distributed, and working with existing teams to further development according to existing standards and conventions. There is also a need for data management expertise. This includes data source acquisition and positioning, providing ongoing feedback and support to expand available data sources while improving the team’s understanding of existing data sources, transforming and loading data into data models and platforms, both standardized and unstandardized, and creating and maintaining a growing body of documentation. Finally, this position involves translating technical specifications into SQL code, generating data deliverables, and conducting code reviews. An ideal candidate will be able to quickly master medical terminology related to filling data requests, communicate effectively with business analysts, cross-functional technical teams, and academic clients, and write SQL queries that optimize the organization of data deliverables, perform analyses using R and Python, and generate visualizations using Tableau. Prior to delivery of data, the incumbent will assist with data quality checks, making sure that each deliverable matches the original request specifications, and that the data is of the highest quality. Incumbent must adhere to all institutional data governance policies and may be partially or wholly supported by partnerships with Departments, Sections, and other Research Units. Positions with contractual grant funding or other departmental funding support may be required to work in person up to 4 days per week. Position operates within a federal recharge center.
This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Responsibilities

  • Gather and analyze healthcare and other related data to identify and interpret trends in support of data requests, business cases, and proposed projects.

  • Design, construct, test, and maintain data warehouse and related functionality including extraction and transformation of data using SSIS.

  • Design, develop, and test business intelligence outputs (including visualization) to ensure useful and insightful information using software including R, Tableau, and/or Excel to support research and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Test and validate data with the purpose of understanding and making conclusions to support decision-making processes.

  • Manage a variety of information systems and data files, including large and complex files: analyzing file structure, using and creating file layouts, transforming raw data into finished products.

  • Monitor for timely and accurate completion of work.

  • Participate in strategic initiatives to enhance data management and reporting to support research and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborate closely with a cross-functional team of Data Scientists, Project Managers, and Developers to ensure high-quality data delivery to faculty.

  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other research teams.

  • Perform duties in a matrixed management environment.

  • Proactively identify issues and opportunities to improve data systems and related policies as an aspect of data governance.
    Communicate effectively with management, support staff, and faculty partners.

  • Adhere to all institutional data governance policies.

  • Develops Business Intelligence (BI) and other analytical applications. Works to achieve an integrated reporting and analysis environment, effectively leveraging analytical systems and tools.

  • Guides requirements analysis, translating requirements into a scope document and developing reporting deliverables based on the design.

  • Works with users to ensure deliverables are meeting or exceeding expectations. Provides support and communicates issues to users as defined by IT standards.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications
 

Education:

  • Healthcare or clinical/medical degree.

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience with ETL tools.

  • 5 years of experience with SQL, Python, Java, Tableau.

  • Experience translating between clinical and IT/informatics domains.

  • Experience with various common data models (OMOP, PCORnet).

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Clarity certification.

Preferred Competencies

  • Understanding of various common data models (OMOP, PCORnet).

  • Understanding of research methodology and healthcare terminology.

  • High level of problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Knowledge of healthcare data including ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT.

  • Expert in SQL and Excel.

  • Proficiency in relational databases with experience designing transformations, mappings, and working with reference tables.

  • Ability to translate technical information to non-technical audiences.

  • Critical thinking and multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Time management skills.

  • Proficiency in creating technical specifications, business cases, and other development-related documentation. 

  • Experience in other analytic platforms including R, Stata, Python, SAS.

  • Experience with business intelligence and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, etc.

  • Experience investigating data issues and working with a cross-functional team for problem resolution.

  • Strict understanding of and adherence to data governance policies.

Working Conditions

  • Office, hybrid.

  • Positions that share funding with departments, sections, or other research units may be required to be on campus up to 4 days per week.
