Job Summary/Responsibilities
The Editor-in-Chief is ultimately responsible for all aspects of Spinnaker’s news coverage, including its website, digital magazine, and subscription newsletters. The Editor-in-Chief coordinates the ongoing news, sports and features coverage of campus events and content of interest to UNF students, faculty, and staff. The Editor-in-Chief’s goal is to ensure that Spinnaker remains true to its mission to provide the university community with news, entertainment, and a forum for the exchange of ideas. It is the charge of the Editor-in-Chief to coordinate with the other leaders at Spinnaker so that they work together synergistically.
Although the Editor-in-Chief should regularly consult with the media adviser for feedback and guidance, it is ultimately the Editor-in-Chief’s responsibility to represent the Spinnaker professionally. As an official liaison, the Editor-in-Chief deals with university officials and other department administrators. They also serve as an ex-officio member of the Spinnaker Media Advisory Board.
This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. The employee may be asked to perform other related duties as required to meet Spinnaker’s ongoing needs. Pay is a lump sum contingent on meeting the responsibilities and qualifications of the position consistent with a minimum of 20 hours of competent effort each week. The Editor-In-Chief must:
  • Coordinate the editorial content on all platforms and seek content of interest to the readers.
  • Plan and maintain weekly editorial and staff meetings.
  • Assign and enforce deadlines, including deadlines for one’s own articles.
  • Read and edit all articles before publication.
  • Publish final edited articles in a timely manner.
  • Track the progress of reach through Google Analytics.
  • Maintain Spinnaker archives.
  • Train employees on journalistic best practices, editorial and office protocol, technique, distribution, etiquette, and layout.
  • Oversee and enforce department policies and Spinnaker Media’s bylaws.
  • Act as a representative of the Spinnaker in an official capacity.
  • Build relationships with university administrators and officials and meet with them regularly.
  • Interview, hire, and oversee staffers, including regular feedback and instruction.
  • Oversee working conditions, making sure to maintain a positive, productive workplace.
  • Deal with personnel matters, including payroll, priority registration, office availability, resignations, terminations, and dispute resolution.
  • Be available in the office for meetings with staffers and members of the public with complaints and inquiries.
  • Attend weekly leader meetings unless excused for absence.
  • Be eligible to work at a minimum of 48 weeks of a calendar year.
  • Balance the budget with the Spinnaker Media office manager and adviser to reconcile advertising revenue and operating expenses.
  • Produce budget requests and presentations when needed.
  • Remain off of academic probation (the board may extend a semester waiver).
  • Follow and instill the ethics and laws of the bodies (such as SPJ, the Constitution) that pertain to publication.
  • Attend advisory board meetings in keeping with Spinnaker Media’s Advisory Board bylaws.

Required Qualifications
Must be a current UNF student.
This position requires strong initiative, interpersonal and communication skills, a good understanding of journalistic practices, and good news judgment. The position requires at least one semester of experience working at a student media outlet.
Must be continuously enrolled at UNF for the duration of the position and not be on academic probation or suspension as defined by the most recent University of North Florida course catalog.
Preferred Qualifications
Completed course work in communication ethics, communication law, and advanced journalism is helpful, but not required for the position.
