Position Summary
The Lyman Briggs College (LBC) at Michigan State seeks a student-centered professional committed to the mission of a living learning community to serve as an Academic Advisor. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Success and Advising, the Academic Advisor will join a team of 7 advising professionals and help promote inclusion and diversity through advising and support of students. We are seeking a student-centered professional to join our team who approaches the work with adaptability, creativity, and enthusiasm.
This hire is part of college-wide programs and initiatives focused on advancing DEIB: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. We believe that this agenda is best advanced by a college of faculty, advisors, staff, and students with varied perspectives and lived experiences who challenge biases and conventions and teach and learn in community.
The primary roles of this position include:
ACADEMIC ADVISING (70%): Foster student development through thoughtful conversations, empathy for students’ individual paths, and engaged listening. Advise students on course selection and progress toward graduation, exploration of high impact learning practices, and personal and professional development. Refer students, as necessary, to other University units for assistance with education, career, and personal concerns. Promote a community committed to inclusion and productive dialogue through individual student development and programming.
STUDENT SUCCESS AND RETENTION (30%): Identify and develop initiatives to address barriers to academic success and to foster a community for equitable and accessible learning Coordinate programming to improve retention, such as the Briggs Summer Scholars program, academic warning support, and university-wide retention efforts. Partner with the LBC coordinators of recruitment, new student orientation, and first year retention to develop and maintain an overall strategy for student yield and retention.

Minimum Requirements
Master's Degree
1-3 years of post-graduate work experience
Experience working with students from high school to college age.
Ability to accommodate a changeable work schedule, including some evenings and weekends for student events.
Desired Qualifications
Master’s Degree in student affairs, educational administration, counseling, or related field.
Experience in student advising and/or retention (high school or college-age), with skills in developing relationships with current students and families.
Experience in supporting students with diverse and intersectional identities, including race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, and ability.
Ability to manage projects, events, and programs.
Appreciation for study in the sciences, technology, or interdisciplinary STEM fields.
Can articulate the benefits of a residential learning environment.
Commitment to one’s own growth and development as a professional in student affairs.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to adapt messages to a variety of audiences and familiarity with a variety of communication strategies, including social media.
