Job Summary:

Reporting to the Executive Director of Capital Projects, the Space Planner provides project development and management support for the planning and programming of new and redevelopment of existing campus spaces, ensuring optimal space utilization that aligns with the College’s strategic goals and user
requirements. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: site assessment of facilities, analysis of space utilization, development of concept sketches and test fits, preparation of existing and proposed space allocation and furniture plans, coordination of moves, and updates to the campus space inventory
and CAD floor plans.

Barnard College's 4-acre campus is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan between 116th and 120th Streets along the west side of Broadway. Barnard’s campus encompasses over 1.2 million total square feet of built space among its 16 buildings.

Job Description:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field documentation, measurements, surveys, space condition assessments and data collection of all owned and leased campus spaces via frequent site visits.
  • Meet with academic and administrative groups to verify their current use of space, assess their current facilities, discuss their needs and/or concerns both in terms of space work flows, comfort and convenience in the near term and future. Document and analyze space needs, programming information related to space requirements, adjacencies, and move requirements.
  • Oversee the concept development phase of space projects. As directed with an approved project, develop projects through the next stages of design: preliminary, design development and construction documents or properly transfer the concept work project to another project manager in Capital Projects.
  • Work closely with Capital and Facilities staff and support their work.
  • Maintain and update the space management database to include an inventory of all campus property, infrastructure, buildings, space, departmental allocations, assigned staff spaces, occupancy, and capacity. Include critical data about existing spaces, general descriptions, square footages, characteristics, utilities and other services, furniture and equipment, usage, and classification using NCES FICM and CIP codes. The database must kept be current at all times and updated when new spaces are added or spaces are reconfigured.
  • Prepare existing and proposed space allocations plans, test fits, and furniture layouts.
  • Prepare presentation materials, floor plans, documents, reports and other graphic products to assist with the visualization and communication of planning findings.
  • Create space utilization, occupancy and capacity reports, summarizing by department use or other organizational groupings.
  • Update existing CAD floor plans, including after construction projects are completed.
  • Maintain library of all building plans and facilities studies.
  • Manage vendors engaging in space planning projects, including the development of RFP’s.
  • Coordinate moves with internal staff and external vendors.
  • Coordinate room and wayfinding signage installations.
  • Other related duties consistent with the requirements of the position may be assigned as needed.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of space planning principles and best practices.
  • Knowledge of surveying techniques.
  • Working knowledge of relevant government building codes, regulations and sustainable design.
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to learn new software. Must be proficient in AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop. Knowledge of other graphic software is a plus.
  • Strong organization, communication and analytical skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple projects, and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups, including faculty, staff, students, contractors, consultants and users at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy at all times, sustain the highest level of professionalism, and be customer-service driven and flexible in attitude.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or related field with a minimum of two years of full-time professional experience in space planning, design, or construction management and administration;
  • Or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of full-time professional experience in space planning, design, or construction management and administration.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education or with similarly complex institutions.
  • Technical experience in database systems development and maintenance, especially with Integrated Workplace Management Software (IWMS) or Computer-Aided Facility Management Software (CAFM).


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to access, including climbing ladders, any portion of a construction/facility site to survey, assess conditions, and perform inspections of existing conditions.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.

Salary: $85,000 - $90,000

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
