We’re seeking a talented and versitile Software Engineering Manager to join our high performing team. The Engineering Manager plays a key role for the learner’s experience across the EdPlus digital portfolio. Leading the engineering team, this position will oversee the engineering team responsible for delivering robust technology solutions and partnering with the other leads to iterate, optimize and enhance digital experiences for online learners.

Working closely with stakeholders, units, SEO, QA, and analytics teams to guide the technical landscape of our products to establish standards and integrations across projects in creating efficiencies and scalable solutions. The engineering Manager will also manage, mentor and oversee work produced by not only EdPlus developers but also student developers and contractors. 

The Solutions Engineering team is responsible for creating solutions and enhancing our current technology stack for a variety of challenges as part of an innovative environment refining how users engage with higher education. Working collaboratively in diverse teams, creates forward-thinking and thoughtful experiences ensuring web products support ASU and EdPlus overall strategy and goals.

Essential duties:

  • Day to day management of a growing team, including hiring, coaching and performance management.
  • Champion for quality and best engineering practices to ensure building and maintaining a performant, scalable and reliable system.
  • Participate in product development discussions and map functional requirements to a technical design and a project schedule.
  • Have technical discussions with team members to agree on product scope and delivery schedules.
  • Participate in design and code reviews produced by engineers.
  • Maintain product roadmap and oversee product and feature launches.
  • Work with data science leads on data implementation standards.
  • Maintain an operating system that helps translate vision and business goals into objectives that give teams clarity and autonomy.
  • Monitor and report out on product performance, opportunities and gaps.
  • Establish and enforce effective team processes that scale.
  • Identifying gaps within the team and work to fill gaps with talent, experience or training; develop, onboard or implement new tools and processes
  • Participate in and lead team discussions relative to ongoing projects and needs.
  • Guide effective documentation and communication of engineering processes to both EdPlus engineers, student engineers and contractors.
  • Contribute to the larger IT community across the University.
  • Assess team priorities and work through daily standups to help manage workload.
  • Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, or related field AND five years of related experience, which includes three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired qualifications:

  • Hands-on software development experience and is open to writing code, if necessary.(5 + years)
  • Evidence of effective communication skills with cross-functional teams about various engineering topics such as system architecture, detailed design, APIs, etc.
  • Experience in Javascript, NodeJs, HTML5, CSS3.
  • Experience with at least one major JS library / framework such as VueJS, Angular.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of both front-end and back-end web technologies: HTTP(S), XML, JSON, CSS and Javascript solutions.
  • Experience with service-oriented architecture, REST based services and orchestration of APIs for web applications.
  • Experience with NodeJS and its ecosystem, relational and non-relational databases (MySQL, MongoDB), content management systems (Drupal, WordPress).
  • Experience working closely with design and research leads and having a shared vocabulary.
  • Experience creating standards and technical requirements for cross-collaboration of design and engineering teams.
  • Experience working with user researchers and using data to frame new solutions.
  • Product management experience to help coordinate and prioritize efforts based on business goals, while also proving out its value across the organization.
  • Experience building and maintaining a design system.
  • Experience presenting solutions to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Experience in building a strong team culture.
  • Ability to communicate thoughtfully, using problem-solving skills and build positive working relationships with other team members and groups within EdPlus and across ASU.
  • Experience working on a collaborative, fast-paced team and with other experts across other disciplines.
  • Experience managing, coaching or mentoring other engineers or student developers.
  • Experience with a variety of development methodologies and ability to adapt these to the needs of an organization using Agile processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software development lifecycle and standard methodologies.
  • Experience leading engineering projects from inception to shipped software.
  • Consistent track record of hiring, and developing great engineers.
  • A passion for understanding the user, and a strong communicator of the user's perspective in building the best solutions for the most meaningful problems.
  • Evidence of a bachelor's degree or higher in a related field.

Working Environment

EdPlus at ASU is located at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education, and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.

EdPlus at ASU supports flexible work options, ranging from alternate work schedules to hybrid remote work schedules, subject to approvals per ASU policy. (This is not a fully remote position.)
