About the Department
 

The Social Sciences Collegiate Division (SSCD) is one of the largest undergraduate divisions within the University of Chicago’s undergraduate college. While the College serves as the primary academic center for all undergraduate students, collegiate division courses and programs are taught and overseen by faculty, staff, and graduate students from across the university. The collegiate divisions oversee the administration of undergraduate curriculum and coordinate undergraduate offerings administered by the university’s graduate divisions. The SSCD is home to 26 different majors and minors, the Social Sciences Core and Civilization Studies general education programs, and Chicago Studies, and it supports numerous academic initiatives that engage undergraduates in social science inquiry. The staff of each collegiate division works under the leadership of a faculty divisional master to implement policies and procedures that uphold the College’s longstanding tradition of exceptional curriculum while enabling innovations that further enrich the undergraduate academic experience.


Job Summary
 

Reporting to the Social Sciences Collegiate Divisional Administrator, the Social Sciences Collegiate Division Coordinator manages the SSCD Core’s instructional infrastructure, coordinates the division’s curriculum and co-curricular offerings, manages communications, and supports financial management and operations. While supporting the SSCD Masters’ offices in service of the College’s mission and initiatives, the Coordinator also independently manages the operations of the Social Sciences Core. The Coordinator manages the SSCD’s curricular and co-curricular offerings, including the Democracy Studies minor, the SSCD’s general education programs, and course clusters, by coordinating interdisciplinary efforts and maintaining related data. With the SSCD Master’s office, the Coordinator facilitates academic initiatives, such as undergraduate research opportunities and experiential learning programs, by coordinating working groups, tracking projects, and processing payments. The Coordinator also leads the SSCD’s communications efforts by maintaining the SSCD’s websites, collaborating with campus communications partners to promote the visibility of SSCD programs, publicizing SSCD events, and facilitating the SSCD Master’s communications. Additionally, the Coordinator supports the general operations of the SSCD Master’s office and manages payments and procurement associated with the Core and Democracy Studies activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles and maintains the SSCD Core teaching schedule, comprising over 300 course sections each year, in consultation with the Core’s faculty chairs and the Master’s office, and submit and maintain the SSCD Core online course schedule.
  • Assists the Teaching Fellows Program Faculty Director in coordinating the teaching schedules of post-doctoral Teaching Fellows and communicating information about Teaching Fellows’ teaching assignments to relevant groups.
  • Coordinates instructor desk copy and student book orders for the eight SSCD Core sequences by soliciting common reading lists from each sequence, submitting bookstore orders, and working with publishers to obtain instructor desk copies.
  • Coordinates SSCD Core meetings, training workshops, and events, such as evening lectures and film screenings.
  • Interprets and conveys relevant policies to students, staff, and academic personnel, bringing concerns to the SSCD Master’s attention, and liaise between Core instructors and other University offices to access resources, resolve problems, and locate information.
  • Assists the SSCD Core’s faculty chairs in support of their responsibilities within the SSCD, including communicating with the instructional staff on the chair’s behalf, scheduling staff meetings, resolving logistical issues, and other appropriate tasks that enable the faculty chairs’ work.
  • Manages graduate student teaching appointments in the SSCD by establishing and communicating policies and procedures for appointment processing; receiving, auditing, and recording requests for teaching assistants, preceptors, and graduate student lecturers; sending and tracking offers; coordinating payments with the College Dean’s office and graduate divisions.
  • Maintains the SSCD portions of the College Catalog and online course schedules, including the Social Sciences Core and Civilization Studies sequences, Democracy Studies, and other SOSC offerings, by compiling content from various programs and majors, proofreading and reviewing content for accuracy, communicating College deadlines and policies, and collaborating with the Registrar’s office to resolve problems.
  • Coordinates SSCD curricular initiatives by soliciting course information, coordinating faculty committees, and communicating program information to relevant groups.
  • Collaborates with the Master’s office to develop and implement strategies for supporting faculty-proposed curricular initiatives and student research projects.
  • Develops and maintains reports on course offerings, enrollment, and teaching and support data analysis related to curricular development and planning.
  • Compiles and submits quarterly reports on special honors and BA thesis papers.
  • Creates and maintains content for SSCD websites.
  • Facilitates the SSCD Master’s communications by maintaining listservs, distributing messages, and coordinating joint communications with other units.
  • Produces and distributes print and digital promotional materials, such as newsletters, posters, and e-mail announcements.
  • Collaborates with College Communications to expand the online presence of SSCD programs, events, and initiatives.
  • Tracks spending in the SSCD Core and Democracy Studies and prepares regular budget projections.
  • Processes payments and manages procurement associated with SSCD Core, Civilization Studies, and Democracy Studies events, initiatives, and day-to-day operations.
  • Tracks undergraduate research awards and administer award payments.
  • Uses general understanding and experience to administer the delivery of services to program participants and/or beneficiaries.
  • Interacts with faculty, researchers, and staff for committee work or information.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:
