Founded in 1892, the Department of Economics is one of the top five economics departments in the country and an international leader in economics. The Department's central missions are to train students at the undergraduate and graduate level in the methods and ideas of modern economics, and to conduct both basic and applied research in economics that pushes forward the frontier of knowledge in the field. With 40+ faculty, 4 lecturers, 150+ graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, 200+ undergraduates, and 11 staff, the Department is breaking new ground in pioneering research that analyses and proposes solutions to some of the biggest challenges in society today.

We are seeking an experienced Social Science Research Professional 1 to perform work to implement and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the department utilizing specialized/technical knowledge. The individual will report to the principal investigator (PI), Professor Neale Mahoney. S/he must have a genuine interest and experience in health care economics and healthcare/consumer finance market-connected research.

This is a one-year fixed-term position with a possible appointment extension of up to one year.


CORE DUTIES*:


* Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory when precedents do not provide specific guidance. General instruction provided by the supervisor as needed. May interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor or PI. Participate in the development and administration of survey instruments and rating scales requiring judgment in applying non-routine procedures. Analyze and summarize results for review with supervisor. Audit the accuracy and validity of data

* Review and audit case report forms for completion and accuracy with source documents, and ensure compliance with research protocols.

* Identify, select, extract and summarize data and structured information. Present summary of findings to supervisor.

* Conduct literature searches, and write literature summaries and manuscripts, requiring preliminary judgments after the supervisor outlines conceptual approach.

* Build and organize data as requested by principal investigator; use common statistical programs requiring the application of job control language in generating and organizing data.

* Adapt new, nonstandard methods outlined by supervisor in designing and evaluating phases of research projects, (i.e., educational materials, questionnaires, strategies for recruitment, data quality control procedures and processes). May follow up with Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure renewals are approved and completed, seeking guidance where necessary.

* Assist with development, communication and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include web updates, social media, and/or white papers, for use in recruitment, educational, or awareness of programs, with guidance from supervisor.

* May orient and train new staff or students.

Details of specific duties:

* Collecting economic data, conducting statistical analysis, and providing other support associated with the PI's research.

* Creating charts, tables and descriptive text for presentations and maintain databases of research findings.

* Processing text for presentations and econometric methods (e.g. running regressions, estimating economic models).

* Analyzing economic data on health care and consumer finance markets (Medicare data and TransUnion data) for research papers.

This is a 100% FTE, 1 year fixed term] non-exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, and relevant experience in economics research. Experience in health care economics and healthcare/consumer finance market-connected research strongly preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


* General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.

* General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs. Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

* Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately. Effective oral and written communication skills.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:


* Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

* Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.

* Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.

PAY RANGE:

The expected pay range for this position is $27.40 to $36.54 per hour.
