Job Summary: The Student Life Director is responsible for program(s) within a department or division of Student Life, which could include supervision of personnel, budgeting & accounting, administration of programs & activities, evaluation of personnel & programs and reporting.


Additional Department Summary: The Director for Health Promotion and Wellness provides oversight and focused leadership for the Department of Health Promotion and Wellness, part of the Division of Student Life at The University of Alabama. The director is responsible for the overall effective administration and management of department staff and the alignment of programs and services to the overall strategic plan for Health Promotion and Wellness and Student Health and Wellbeing. The director provides direct oversight of all health promotion activities that address priority student health and wellness issues and support the mission of the university and the priorities of the Division of Student Life. The director establishes a campus-wide agenda to advance the health and wellbeing of students and promotes student success through the development, implementation, and supervision of the department’s strategic plan, goals, and measurable objectives. Responsibilities include supervising and evaluating staff; managing and coordinating the budget; advocating for policies and a built environment that address campus and community health; and implementing prevention programs that result in student success and health behavior and status improvement on individual and community levels. This position is oversees planning and implementation for student learning and health behavior, identifies areas of concern and develops appropriate programs and services that respond to student needs. The director is responsible for setting employee and departmental goals and providing budgetary oversight and planning, and evaluation and assessment of employee and organizational performance. The director will interact on a regular basis with executive directors in Student Health and Wellbeing, staff, faculty, students, off-campus providers, vendors, and campus constituents.

Responsibilities also include: developing strategic plans for health promotion that support the unique missions and values of institutions of higher education; examining and addressing campus and community health issues at all levels of the socio-ecological model – intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, community, and public policy; demonstrating cultural competence and inclusivity; applying accepted theoretical frameworks and planning models that address individual and community health; conducting population-based assessments of health status, needs, and assets in partnership with the division's strategic planning and assessment team; conducting environmental assessments of campus and community health needs and resources; developing measurable goals and objectives for health promotion initiatives; implementing evidence-informed health promotion initiatives with fidelity to maximizing effectiveness; using accepted quantitative and qualitative methods for assessment and program evaluation; and contributing professionally to the field. Responsible for completing required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Responsible for holding staff accountable for completion of required training. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.


Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Experience in direct supervision of staff. High degree of personal and professional integrity. Demonstrated financial acumen; effective human, financial, and organizational management experience.
Appreciation for and ability to lead effectively, possessing good political acumen with the ability to build productive alliances.
Skill in working with administrators, faculty, staff, and students in a climate of openness and transparency, integrity, trust, mutual respect, and collaborative problem-solving. Strong interpersonal skills, self-awareness, professional maturity, and emotional intelligence.
Sensitivity to individuals and the ability to work effectively with and understand the interests of students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Self-confident, creative, demonstrating strong initiative, and organization. Knowledge of national best practices in health promotion and student life, including the ability to use research, data, and assessment to guide decision-making.


Skills and Knowledge: The director must possess excellent interpersonal skills, communication, planning, and effective staff and student supervision skills. They must possess excellent skills in the area of time and task management, including the use or departmental resources to stay current on student needs. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible and evening hours. Ability to work with diverse populations. Demonstrated use of sound judgment and competence in managing critical incidents and communications with others. This position requires basic computer skills such as word processing and email, and the ability to effectively interact with University community members.
The director must possess knowledge of the ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education. In addition, the director must demonstrate knowledge of health promotion, behavior changes, and population-based theories, evidence-based health promotion programs/initiatives, environmental management strategies/ecological model, student development theories and models. Additional skills and knowledge include, demonstrated skills in supervision, budget/fiscal management, policy change activities and strategies, and program and organizational assessment and evaluation

Preferred Qualifications: Graduate degree in public health, health promotion, health education or other related discipline from an accredited institution. Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) or Certified in Public Health (CPH). A minimum of five (5) years of experience, five years of full-time professional health promotion work experience, preferably in a higher education setting. Understanding and experience in change management and performance improvement processes and principles. Experience in public research and assessment. Experience with collaboration with campus and community stakeholders on public health and wellness matters. Knowledgeable about the health promoting colleges and universities, ecological models and campus wide cultural change strategies.
