  • Duration: 6 Month Temporary Role
  • Compensation and Benefits: $23.43/hour. Eligible for Medical Benefits, Vacation, Sick, and Holiday pay
  • Schedule is Monday - Friday 6:00A - 2:30P

Under general supervision performs sign fabrication work including but not limited to: reviewing design, layout, and location of signage with customers; completing work requests for signs, posters, name tags, nameplates, etc.

Track data such as font, size, color and location in computerized database; maintain inventory of supplies and prepare purchase orders as needed.

Research products, procedures and methods related to the field of engraving and sign-making. Coordinate work with Campus Planning Dept. according to campus signage program.

Perform maintenance and painting procedures in connection with the maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and equipment following EPA codes and regulations.

  • Demonstrated experience in design, fabrication, maintenance, repair and installation procedures typical to the sign making/paint trade in all types of buildings, facilities substructures, infrastructures, superstructures and parts thereof for a University, College, Hospital, Municipality or other large commercial facility.

  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience using signage materials, substrates, substrate preparation and fastening techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining computerized router/engraving machines and laser engraver machines. Experience operating plotters, vinyl cutting and vinyl printing machines.

  • Experienced user of PC and/or Mac/computers, scanner hardware and software, and digital photography. Experience operating Graphic Design Software such as GSP Graphic Advantage, Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator.

  • Demonstrated experience using database software to record and track signage data.

  • Demonstrated experience operating engraving equipment.

  • Experience preparing surfaces to be painted such as sanding, scraping, wire brushing, and strip with a stripping compound. Knowledge of and demonstrated experience working with construction materials used in painting trade. Experience determining repair needs.

  • Current knowledge of ADA, fire and building code signage requirements, rules and regulations.

  • Demonstrated experience reading color charts, finish schedules and interpreting drawings and sketches.

  • Strong mathematical skills. Ability to perform mathematical computations typical to the trade.

  • Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated experience with the proper use of all power and hand tools (including power saw, power sander, airless spray gun) used in performance of assigned tasks, including cleaning, maintenance and care.

  • Demonstrated experience preparing work orders, descriptions and job estimates.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, self-motivation, adaptability, tactfulness and decisiveness. Ability to communicate effectively with many people of many diverse backgrounds including students, staff, faculty, and customers. Ability to effectively work with co-workers and customers to accomplish work with a high level of quality and efficiency.

  • Excellent customer service skills. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships through a professional and helpful approach in handling customer service needs and problems.

  • Skill to organize and prioritize work. Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities. Ability to follow through and meet deadlines, and possess problem-solving skills and sound judgment.

  • Qualified operator of lifts including scissor lifts and boom lifts preferred.

  • DOJ/FBI background and DMV checks and clearances are required prior to hiring.

  • Must be able to occasionally work at heights from 20-30 feet using electric and hydraulic lifts and scaffolding.

  • Must be able to move through limited access spaces and cover distances on foot to widely separated work sites.

  • Must be physically able to perform essential functions of the position. May work overtime, alternate shifts, or call-back hours as necessary.

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $48,922 - $63,266 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $23.43 - $30.30

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
