Brief Summary of Work for this position:


Positions in this banded class perform skilled work in the maintenance and repair of electronics devices, instruments, equipment and/or systems. Work may involve design and construction or modification of electronic devices. Positions operate standard and/or specialized testing equipment while troubleshooting electronic devices and systems. Some positions may be assigned to a specific system while others may work with multiple systems. Examples of equipment/systems maintained by Electronics Specialists include power switchgear and panel boards with amp meters, power meters and frequency meters, environmental control system, ocean research and monitoring system, fire alarm system, HVAC system, and campus card systems. This may require knowledge of NFPA or other life safety systems codes and standards. Work requires knowledge of electronic principles, mathematical principles and fundamental of physics as applied to electronics.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Weekly fire pump visuals inspections.
  • Monthly fire pump exercise.
  • Monthly visual inspections on dry/pre-action fire protection systems.
  • Monthly visual inspections on wet chemical kitchen hoods/dry chemical elevatorsuppression systems.
  • Quarterly fire protection sprinkler system water flow inspections.
  • Semi-annual battery load testing on fire alarm/burglar alarm systems.
  • Assist with the annual fire alarm inspections.
  • Annual area of rescue inspections.
  • Special attention will be given in the area of preventive maintenance of safety features on campus. This includes ensuring proper voltage exists in electrical boxes by examining and tightening loose connections.

This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the university and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the university may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist in the removal of snow, ice or debris.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience :


Associate's degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Certifications or Licensure:


Valid NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of employment.
