Originally founded in 1997, the Baskin Engineering (hereafter “BE”) is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 20 years, BE has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by on-going research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry.   BE has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. JOB SUMMARY

Uses skills to organize, detail, and assure the completion of the annual Baskin Engineering Space Plan. Provides senior analyst expertise to advise, advance, and support space planning and capital project endeavors as found necessary for the success in the division and campus. Uses experience as seasoned, experienced planning professional to work among colleagues across the campus with a full understanding of industry practices to efficiently find solutions in a transparent, collegial, and professional manner. Operates with considerable independence in concept planning, project definition and feasibility phases of development endeavors.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $99,650 - $117,000/year.  Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Space Plan Execution

  • Provides staff planning services to complete a major annual planning study (Space Plan) critical to strategically meeting all BE’s instructional, student support, lab, office, and administrative requirements.
  • Provides staff planning support services for development and continuance of the Space Plan, including responsibility for collection, analysis, and evaluation of planning data and for preparation and presentation of statistical and graphic supporting material.
  • Oversees quality of Space Plan as a professional document, intended as a model for the campus and greater UC system.
  • Provides expertise in creating Space Plan in a manner to exhibit technical writing ability, tabular analysis, graphic exhibits, and overall, a tone of professional report publication.

25% - Client Management

  • Coordinates with Director to maintain regular office hours for faculty, staff, students, and administration to meet regarding concerns, requests, or opportunities to improve BE space performance.
  • As a senior member of the Space Planning Team, meet with faculty, staff, administration and students to address concerns, requests, or opportunities to improve BE space performance.
  • Research and implement an improved tracking system for all space moves, facility upgrades, and capital improvements that are managed/overseen by the Space Planning Team.
  • Coordinate with Director to have a bi-weekly team review of deadlines, deliverables, and other client concerns brought to the team.

15% - Space Liaison

  • Coordinates with multiple units (e.g., Capital Planning and Space Management; Physical Planning, Development and Operations; Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor; Genomics Institute; etc.) as organized by Director to provide continued momentum on necessary space endeavor on behalf of BE.
  • Works with internal BE personnel, other partnering division leaders, campus administrators, as well as external agencies/contractors to communicate findings of given analysis, and to advocate for improved space performance both for BE and the campus.
  • Collaborates with department and campus leadership on the space planning development; evaluates and advises on the design and allocation.
  • Serves as the back-up point of contact following the Director for all outreach, communication, and receipt of space-sensitive information.

10% - Space Analysis

  • Supports space planning team on a large variety of information-driven reconnaissance, review, data "clean-up", analysis, and reporting as required of the team.
  • Prioritize critical analysis tasks, recognizing those tasks and their relative time to produce results, for important projects necessary for successful BE space performance.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental design, architecture, engineering, urban planning, business, environmental/regulatory compliance, science, or writing, related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough working knowledge in operational planning, design production, city planning, architecture, or other planning-related fields.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with an intention for client success; must have political acumen to manage a variety of demands among groups with conflicting goals.
  • Strong, demonstrable organizational skills.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate degree in related area, including but not limited to architecture, engineering, urban planning, business, environmental/regulatory compliance, science, or writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of the organization, including its architectural history, short and long range development plans, process for attaining development approvals, and ability to manage on-going and proposed development plans.
  • Strong design and document production skills using common software used by the space planning team: AutoCAD, SketchUP, ArcGIS, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Suite, and Google Suite.
  • USGBC LEED Accredited Professional Certification.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must work in Jack Baskin Engineering Building at least three days of the week, preferably on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work a hybrid work schedule and must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
