With broad impact across UCSD's billion-dollar research enterprise, Research IT Services provides a variety of digital research infrastructure services to faculty, research staff, postdoctoral and graduate students, including all academic departments, schools, and UC San Diego Health. Research IT Services coordinates across campus IT providers (including ITS, SDSC, Calit2/Qualcomm Institute, the Library), the Schools, Divisions, Departments and labs, the Office of Research Affairs, the Office of Contract and Grant Administration, the Office of Post-Award Financial Services, and other critical stakeholders to deliver coordinated services critical to all aspects of the research enterprise. Research IT Services is a focused researcher-facing team that provides direct outreach and resource recommendations to faculty, conducts investigation & integration of new technologies, and coordinates between campus technology providers to deliver solutions directly to researchers.

The Research Facilitator acts as an information hub, consulting and coordinating on solutions, connecting faculty and research staff with the technology they need to accomplish world-class research. The Research Facilitator will provide technical guidance, consultation, and research support to UC San Diego faculty and researchers. Coordinate amongst campus technology providers to deliver complex solutions to research IT needs; to communicate to all levels of technical and non-technical members of the campus community to find solutions. The successful candidate will be able to maintain a comprehensive knowledge of research activities on campus, while also maintaining a clear understanding of campus technology service providers and their services. Expert interpersonal skills and professional comportment, along with proven dedication to customer service, are a must.

Responsibilities:

* Applies advanced IT professional concepts and campus / medical center / OP objectives to resolve highly complex issues in one or more IT areas of specialization where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Recommends and may select methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results.

* Provides advanced support and training on new applications. Mentors experienced research-facing facilitators. Assesses the highest level of technical needs within research labs. Analyzes technology to recommend detailed technical solutions, including high-performance computing, high-speed networking, big data transfer and analysis tools, etc. Acts as project manager to coordinate teams collaboration and facilitate meetings on highly technical issues.

* Service owner/leader of UC San Diego's researcher-facing computing and data training program, including managing and administering The Carpentries, co-leading the systemwide training effort, and serving as a lead instructor. Oversee researcher onboarding and technical support for campus research cluster. Teaches programming and related computing and data handling as part of researcher-facing training program.

  • In-depth knowledge of various areas of IT. Broad knowledge of the IT environment. Advanced understanding of issues around use of high-performance computing, high-performance networking, tools to support collaborative research, software development, data handling, cloud storage and computing, and other technology used in the research arena.

  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner. Demonstrated experience teaching computing and data-related subjects to non-IT audiences.

  • Advanced knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. Advanced knowledge of the research and research data lifecycle and workflow.

  • Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Advanced knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications. Strong experience teaching others to program in Python, R and other scientific scripting and data handling languages/environments.

  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions. Experience in data integration and the specification of data services. Ability to understand and model complex knowledge-intensive processes such as scholarly and research processes.

  • Employee must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.

  • Employee must be available to travel as required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $101,200 - $192,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $48.47 - $92.05

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
