The candidate will join the Mouse Embryo Services (MES) Core, within the Department of Immunology. Mouse Embryo Services (MES) Core provides a broad, comprehensive range of services to University of Pittsburgh investigators. The individual will be involved in all services in MES core, including generation of gene editing mouse models, transgenic mice, cryopreservation and long-term storage of mouse sperm/embryos, recovery of mouse lines from cryopreserved germplasm, in vitro fertilization for mouse line rescue, and re-derivation of pathogen free mouse strains. The Individual will be cross trained to provide assistance as necessary with other projects in the Core laboratory.

Qualifications, Education and Work Experience Required:

Bachelor’s Degree plus a minimum of 3 years of experience with gene modified mice generation.

Must have excellent skills related to the care of small animals after undergoing surgery.

Must have experience with managing mouse colony and related husbandry duties.



Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent and complex laboratory work and experiments. Analyzes and interprets data, compiles results, and prepares reports. Maintains inventory, ordering, and logs. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and prepares data visualizations.


Essential Functions 

Duties include but not limited to the following:

 1.  Generation of gene modified mouse lines, performing mouse pronuclear microinjection and cytoplasmic injection.

 2.   Mouse surgery including embryo transfer, vasectomy male surgery.

 3.   Manage mouse colony. Duties include mouse strain breeding, collecting samples for genotyping, weaning et al.

 4.   Re-derive mouse from cryopreserved sperm and embryos.

 5.   Mouse sperm/embryo cryopreservation.

 6.   Processing the shipment of Cryo-preserved samples.

 7.   Execute timely communication with the primary investigator (PI) to provide updates on all scientific projects.
