The Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is a pivotal role, focused on conducting cutting-edge research and development in scientific domains that involve significant computational components. Job Summary
The Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is a pivotal role, focused on conducting cutting-edge research and development in scientific domains that involve significant computational components. This role not only thrives on but also contributes to the rich technical expertise and capabilities at the NCSA. A key responsibility includes the development and management of funded research and development projects within the Center. This encompasses not just leading these projects but also ensuring their alignment with the Center's strategic objectives and scientific mission. The Senior Research Scientist is expected to foster an environment of innovation and excellence, leveraging the Center's resources to push the boundaries of scientific discovery and computational research.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct Research Relevant to NCSA's Mission:
  • Apply knowledge in ML and NLP and computing to develop novel tools and improve existing approaches in order to support research across various scientific domains, e.g. multidimensional biomedical and voice/phenomic datasets, including development of scientific workflows, algorithms and statistical analyses.
  • Investigate novel approaches and tools towards accelerating scientific discovery utilizing computation and or data
  • Develop and/or drive development of new cyberinfrastructure in support of R&D area
  • Manage team of professionals on one or more funded activities
  • Leadership and Outreach:
  • Provide leadership within the community and the Center with regards to future research, development, and infrastructure decisions
  • Form mutual collaborations/partnerships with campus, national, and international researchers
  • Service to the research community, e.g. serving as a reviewer, serving on committees, etc
  • Represent NCSA and your research activities on campus through presentations, committees, courses and joint initiatives.
  • Disseminate work through publications, presentations, and other scholarly products (e.g. software)
  • Provide mentorship with regards to area of expertise to center cyber professional staff and students
  • Funding Development:
  • Track research activity and funding opportunities within area of expertise
  • Contribute to, or lead, project proposals, serving at the level of CO-PI or senior personnel.

Minimum Qualifications
PhD degree in a field relevant to the use of computation, analysis, data, and software. 3+ years research and development experience Demonstrated ability to manage and financially support cyber professional staff on research & development activities Demonstrated ability to write proposals and scholarly manuscripts, or other peer-reviewed products Co-PI/PI on one or more funded activities that fund cyber professional staff
Preferred Qualifications
Experience integrating students into research activities
Experience teaching or co-teaching at the college-level
Engagement with one or more Colleges within a University setting
Appointments with one or more Units/Centers within a University setting
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. Minimum salary is $126,500 and is commensurate with experience.
