The University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking applicants for a Mass Spectrometry Facility Manger who will be responsible for performing day-to-day operations and organization of user training and assisted usage of instruments in the Mass Spectrometry core facility.
The Core Manager assists the Core Director with ongoing operation of the Mass Spectrometry (MS) Core which provides mass spectral and molecular weight analysis to researchers at UMass, neighboring academic institutions and industrial partners. Work with the Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) Core Facility Management, Director of Core Facilities and Director of IALS to establish operating protocols. Ensure daily operation, maintenance and calibration of equipment in MS Core. Analyze samples for users and assist faculty, students and external users with training and daily operation.
Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry or related field required with laboratory experience in mass spectrometry preferred. Or, M.S. in Analytical Chemistry or related field required with 5+ years of laboratory experience in mass spectrometry or equivalent experience.
Experience with operation of a range of mass spectrometry instrumentation preferred. Experience conducting research in an academic environment is preferred. Must understand scientific methods and research requirements. Knowledge of operation of safe handling of cryogens (liquid nitrogen, liquid helium) and safe operation of instruments with high magnetic fields is required. Knowledge of principles of laboratory operation and management is required. Environmental Health and Safety laboratory safety training is required, and must be kept up to date. Laboratory hazardous waste management is required. Proven ability to maintain productive relationships with faculty, researchers, students and external collaborators is expected.
