DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks applications from qualified individuals to fill a full-time Research Associate III position. Candidate will be a key personnel with a focus on leading the daily operations and experimentation at a specialized Subsurface Observatory at a secure and contaminated site to investigate field scale microbial ecology. Main responsibilities will include the design and implementation of studies incorporating a systems biology approach, utilizing commercial and proprietary analytical instrumentation and mentoring colleagues working at the field site.

 



Qualifications

 

Requirements:

·       Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering with extensive microbial ecology experience.

·       Molecular and microbiological analysis techniques: HPIC, GC_FID, NGS, classical microbial physiology assays, direct cell counts.

·       Must have demonstrated field research capabilities with long term monitoring equipment and active sampling of groundwater and sediment in a contaminated environment.

·       Strong verbal and written communication skills and strong presentation skills with specific emphasis on scientific research plans and results to DOE sponsors, project colleagues, vendors.

·       Must generate first authored manuscripts as well as contribute as co-author. Must present at scientific meetings.

·       Participation in DOE site visits, retreats and program renewal project preparation.

·       Must work in a secure area (Y-12 complex), U.S. citizen with strict adherence to site procedures.

·       Knowledge of safe work practices: 40h HAZWOPER and Rad Worker II certifications up to date.

·       Expertise with multiple software platforms: Python, Coral, HydroVu, HOBOLink, RockWorks, Google Earth, Microsoft Office Package, KBase.

·       Ability to meet demanding physical requirements of the job: outdoors in various weather conditions on non-uniform ground: standing, walking, squatting, bending, lifting.

·       Ability to use hand and power tools.

·       Problem-solve, troubleshoot.
