Job Summary

UCSF Office of Medical Education is seeking a Senior Project Manager who brings expertise in strategic planning, project management, policy development, and business process analysis.  The incumbent independently uses and applies in-depth knowledge and experience in managing projects that impacts the entire organization and external programs to stabilize the clinical environment and enable the expansion of medical education programs in the San Joaquin Valley. They operate in a highly visible, politically sensitive, legally complex and evolving arena.

In collaboration with the San Joaquin Valley Program In Medical Education (SJV PRIME+) program leads and the three campuses (UCSF, UCSF Fresno, and UC Merced), the Senior Project Manager uses advanced professional concepts and objectives to address and resolve complex policy and/or program issues. Works on significant, strategic issues and problems requiring political sensitivity, where analysis of circumstances and information requires an in-depth evaluation of factors.  This includes:

  • Building the foundational program infrastructure with key roles to support the successful execution of near and long-term strategies
  • Convening regional partners to promote collaboration and transparent communications
  • Conducting negotiations and contracting with clinical sites and provider groups
  • Developing formal faculty experience initiatives

The senior project manager provides leadership, guidance, education, and policy development, formulates new policies and procedures for implementation, and represents the organization to internal and external constituencies. The senior project manager will demonstrate expert interpersonal and collaborative skills to build strong working relationships with stakeholders and leaders at all levels across three campuses and externally.

The ideal candidate is a highly skilled professional with an expert understanding of project management in support of senior leaders of complex programs. The candidate will have a minimum of ten (10) years of operational experience in which the individual has demonstrated expert judgment in working with leaders and key stakeholders to achieve project goals.  This position will report to the SJV PRIME+ Program Director, as well as partner with organizational and program leads.

About SJV PRIME+ Program
The San Joaquin Valley Program In Medical Education (SJV PRIME+) leverages the power of three campuses (UCSF, UCSF Fresno, and UC Merced) to increase the size and diversity of the physician workforce that will be representative of the community they will serve. This will be achieved by:

  • Substantially increasing the number of learners from the Valley who demonstrate cultural humility accepted to medical school
  • Training and graduating 21st Century Physicians Leaders committed to serving the SJV, advocating for the patient population, and working with community partners to address existing social determinants of health

Drawing from the missions of UC Merced and UCSF, SJV PRIME+ will advance health worldwide by research/inquiry, health professions education and teaching, public service, and excellence in patient care. To achieve this mission, UC Merced and UCSF, inclusive of its regional campus in Fresno, will design and implement a multi-campus SJV Baccalaureate/MD program encompassing the following:

  • Baccalaureate education and preparation for medical school at UC Merced
  • Development of an equivalent UCSF regional medical school campus
  • Design, test, and implement innovative systems of healthcare

About the Department

The School of Medicine’s Office of Medical Education (OME) is the administrative unit that oversees all health professions education programs for the School of Medicine which includes 1,200 teaching faculty, 650 medical students, 1500 residents and fellows and 30,000 continuing education activities each year. For the past ten years, UCSF has been the only medical school ranked in the top five for research and for primary care training. The Office of Medical Education sets all strategic directives for medical education across the enterprise. OME is responsible for ensuring the highest quality learning and teaching environment for our programs and the support and development of over 110 staff.  


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in project management, operations, or program administration with a focus on cross-functional teams.
  • Expert knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Expert knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures and external regulatory requirements in policy domain.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques.
  • Expert analytical / problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, with a track record of building and leading high-performing teams.
  • Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to effectively manage complex ideas and influence others, including senior leaders, both verbally and in writing to achieve project goals.
  • Highly skilled in all levels of project management.
  • Expert ability to understand and navigate an organization with political acumen.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • An ability to be flexible, creative, and resourceful as you navigate challenges internally and externally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Familiarity with undergraduate and graduate medical education.
