The University of Chicago Department of Mathematics invites applications for a position of Senior Instructional Professor (open rank). The selected candidate will be appointed as Assistant Senior Instructional Professor, Associate Senior Instructional Professor, or Senior Instructional Professor, with rank determined by qualifications. Depending on the rank, the appointment will be for a term of up to five years, renewable with the possibility for promotion. This is a career-track position with a competitive salary and benefits. The appointment is expected to begin between July 1, 2024 and September 1, 2024.

The primary responsibilities of this position involve the management of our program of courses for students majoring in the physical sciences, mathematical sciences, social sciences, and molecular engineering. This position will take charge of courses for non-math majors; updating the content of the courses, having periodic discussions with other departments about their needs and supervising those who teach in the program. Additional duties include ensuring courses fit together through collaboration with, and oversight of, instructors teaching service courses; teaching three one-quarter courses per year and directing a variety of service courses; supervising course instruction, assisting with course placement, and advising students.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field

  • At least two years of teaching experience as the instructor of record in a range of undergraduate mathematics courses, such as single-variable calculus, multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, or differential equations

  • Experience in management of academic programs, personnel, and budgets

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or academic background in the physical sciences
