Position Overview

The work of The Achievement & Assessment Institute (AAI) and its centers is guided by one simple principle: improving the lives of children and adults. We provide innovative tools to enhance the capacity of organizations that help children, adults, and communities and we offer support to KU faculty whose research relates to key areas of our mission.

The Center for Certification and Competency-Based Education , C3Be, a center within the Achievement and Assessment Institute and the University of Kansas, seeks a Senior Instructional Designer to design competency-based learning experiences and assessments. The Senior Instructional Designer will lead the design of learning modules for competency-based education programs and offerings and collaborate with internal and external partners for the development and delivery of the programs using the Canvas LMS.


Job Description

50% - Learning Design & Development:

  • Collaborate with faculty to design and build competency-based education online learning modules for delivery in the Canvas learning management system.
  • Coordinate design efforts across multiple faculty within a program team, to maintain competency alignment and support a cohesive learner experience.
20% - Assessment Design:
  • Collaborate with C3Be psychometricians and faculty to design competency-based authentic assessments aligned to the stated competencies and performance indicators, including rubrics and feedback tools for assessors/instructors.
  • Develop tasks and tools to support learner self-assessment or formative feedback.
15% - Implementation and Production:
  • Work with Digital Media Specialists and other campus partners, such as KUIT Educational Technologists, to implement and facilitate the use of technologies that support teaching and learning in the Canvas learning management system.
  • Conduct quality and accessibility reviews of learning modules and support revisions as needed to meet Jayhawk Flex Design Standards.
10% - Training & Support:
  • Develop support documentation and/or facilitate workshops for faculty in the areas of competency-based education program design or online teaching and learning.
  • Develop support documentation and/or multimedia for learners.
5% - Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

This position will be on-site at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, curriculum & instruction, educational technology, or related field.
  • 5 years of experience designing teaching & learning experiences for adult learners and/or within higher education.
  • 3 years of experience designing learning experiences for online/asynchronous delivery.
  • 3 years of experience applying universal design and accessibility principles in education.
  • 3 years of experience using design thinking methods and iterative design processes, particularly backwards design.
  • Experience working collaboratively and creatively in a deadline-driven environment as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience managing multiple projects at different stages, while meeting deadlines and quality standards as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Experience with competency-based educational program design & instruction.
  • Experience with active learning pedagogies and/or assessment approaches such as Project Based Learning (PBL), performance assessments, evidence-centered assessment design, portfolios.
  • Experience working with a variety of teaching and learning technologies such as Adobe products, Articulate360, Canvas, Microsoft Teams, Office 365, VoiceThread, Zoom etc.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the higher education environment and experience working successfully with university faculty/subject matter experts.
  • Experience collaborating with remote colleagues, desirable.
  • Experience in designing best practices in pedagogy for adult and/or online learners.
