Senior Electronic Specialist

Regular, Full-time, Market Range 08, biweekly   

 

This position will fabricate new prototype analog and digital electronic, and eletro-mechanical devices and perform repairs and maintenance of departmental equipment.  This position is expected to design electrical devices to meet the needs of faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate students for use in instructional and research projects in the Department of Chemistry.  Such projects will involve concept design of advanced electronic instrumentation, electro-mechanical devices visualization and device construction.

 

More Specific Responsibilities Include:

·         Design of Novel Scientific Equipment, Construction and Assembly.  Using advanced knowledge of both electronic and mechanical equipment to solve a variety of complicated problems for scientific research.  Some of the programs used are labview, Arduino, and Rasberry Pi Programming & configuration

o   Excellent internal customer service:  advises faculty, staff, students, and other researchers regarding the design of instruments.  Often when only provided a crude and simple drawing.

o   Make suggestions related to design solutions to solve the problem that has been presented which will result in a new scientific instrument.

·         Repair and maintain a variety of departmental and PI Research Equipment

o   repair of electronic problems in minor and major scientific instrumentation

o   maintain continuity among faculty and graduate students, by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and flaws within scientific equipment

o   communicate status of projects to the customers, including indicating delays and reasons for delays

o   document actions by completing production and maintenance logs

·         Research of parts for repair and assembly

o   identify failed components and replace using OEM parts

o   discover obsolete components and research alternate parts and methods of assembly and installation

o   maintain electronic test equipment and utilize in circuit analysis

·         Scientific equipment installation, maintenance, removal and support

o   move and install new equipment into classrooms or labs

o   remove and dispose of non-repairable or obsolete scientific equipment

o   clean out labs and ensure specialized equipment is disposed of properly and safely

o   support routine NMR liquid nitrogen and liquid helium fills

·         Repair of PC/MAC Computers, Tablets, and associated accessories

o   upgrade software and hardware for PC's and MAC

o   unix/linux installion and configuration

o   license server maintenance and support

 



Qualifications

 

 

Requirements:

 Education: Associate degree in Electronics (or equivalent vocational or technical experience), training in customization and implementation of novel electronic circuits.

Five (5) years experience in electronics troubleshooting, repair and design.  

·         Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

o   Programming and configuration experience in Lab view and Linux & Unix

o   must be able to manipulate and create graphs and spreadsheets in Excel

o   must be proficient in MS Office software

o   ability to design complex analog and digital electronic circuits

o   ability to implement electronic designs into functional circuits and instrumentation

o   ability to visualize equipment mechanical design flaws and work with machinists to create replacement parts

o   ability to interact positively and in a respectful, cooperative manner with people in a multi-cultural work environment

o   good judgement, stay on task and pay attention to detail

o   knowledge of environmental, health and safety requirements

o   reliable in attendance, clean and neat in appearance, in good physical health and able to perform moderately strenuous work activities.

·         Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

o   Programming experience in Lab View, Linux & Unix

o   must be able to manipulate and create graphs and spreadsheets in Excel

o   must be proficient in MS Office software

o   Experienced in use of circuit design hardware and software. 

 

The Department of Chemistry is the oldest PhD granting department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, offering the University’s first PhD degree in 1947. Salary:  The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and other qualifications, and is accompanied by a standard University benefits package (see https://hr.tennessee.edu/benefits/). This is a regular, full-time, market range 08, staff position.
