DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
University of California Press is one of the most forward-thinking scholarly publishers, committed to influencing public discourse and challenging the status quo. POSITION SUMMARY
University of California Press seeks a Senior Editor for our lists in premodern history, world history, and religion. The successful candidate will also bring creative ideas for developing a complementary acquisitions area that builds on the renowned interdisciplinary strengths of UC Press. Under general direction, has responsibility for developing the strategic growth plan and list strategy for at least one publishing program, acquiring approximately 25 titles per year including meeting specific annual signing and transmittal goals.
Responsibilities

  • 65% Acquisitions: --Expands network of scholars, authors, and agents for the purpose of obtaining manuscripts, and judges whether or not they are publishable, editorially and financially. --Independently obtains critical readings and rejects manuscripts or recommends them for publication. --Prepares analysis for editorial and financial feasibility for presentation to editorial committee to build case for proposed titles. --Negotiates terms for publishing contracts.
  • 15% Publishing Strategy: Independently develops the publishing list strategy, including the management of backlist titles, and conceives new book ideas for publishing program.
  • 10% May lead, develop, or provide oversight and direction of the work of less experienced acquisitions editors. May supervise editorial assistants and less experienced acquisitions editors.
  • 10% May work on special department level projects or serve on task forces.

Experience
Minimum of 7 years of experience in publishing required.
Required Qualifications
  • Proven knowledge of all aspects of scholarly publishing.
  • Knowledge of at least one assigned subject area(s); ability to comprehend and interpret complex concepts.
  • Sophisticated entrepreneurial skills to identify, create, develop, and evaluate book concepts, proposals and backlist strategies that have a high degree of editorial or financial impact.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of industry standards for editorial acquisitions and product development to successfully manage projects through all stages of the publishing process and address unique issues.
  • Proven skills in understanding and using financial models to determine and demonstrate financial viability and goals of assigned projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external parties.
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills to articulate complex ideas and issues in individual and group settings.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Advanced analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem resolution skills.
  • Strong use of internet searches, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database and e-mail applications.
  • Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training required

Travel Requirements
15% Travel to academic conferences, campuses, and to meet with authors
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
The person hired will be required to reside within California (or relocate within a reasonable amount of time) and report to work on-site at UC's Office of the President (UCOP) located in Oakland, CA on a hybrid schedule (2 days/week) on a regular basis.
SALARY AND BENEFITS

Payscale: $105,000 - $116,000, commensurate with experience
Full Salary Range: $85,800 - $158,200*
*The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
