The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.


Position Summary

The Senior Director of Student Affairs is responsible for management of all administrative support for VP&S medical students that fall outside of the curriculum. The incumbent will develop and manage a wide range of events, initiatives, and polices relating to student affairs, student clubs and activities, and career advising and residency-related services. The incumbent will supervise and manage Student Affairs staff, interact, and partner with VP&S students, as well as faculty and administration. The position reports to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Support & Services


Responsibilities

  • Directs the operations and strategy for areas in Student Affairs (including Activities/VP&S Club, Career Advising & Residency Services, and Student Services).
  • Trains, supervises, and handles performance management and training for a student affairs staff of 7, including 4 direct reports: Directors and Associate Directors in Student Affairs in the areas of: Activities/VP&S Club, Student Services, Career Advising & Residency Services, and the Student Services Coordinator, and oversight of the Director of the Community Cross Cultural Educational Programs. Helps to ensure office processes and scheduling are as efficient as possible and collaborates with colleagues in the Office of Medical Education (OME) and student leaders to innovate and introduce new initiatives and programs. Establish career development opportunities for the student affairs staff.
  • Oversight for the planning of all major ceremonies and ongoing community events for MD Students in partnership with the Associate/Director of Student Services. This includes New Student Orientation, the White Coat Ceremony, Clinicians Ceremony, Commencement, and all “House” related community and individual class events.
  • Oversight of the planning of the year-long calendar of engaging social events  as well as programs related to career advising and residencies in partnership with the Associate/Director of Career Advising and Residency Services. This includes a wide range of information sessions, peer advising programs, personal statement workshops, mock interview programs, Match Day celebrations, as well as individualized student support.
  • Takes an active leadership role with the Associate Dean of Student Career Development and the Associate/Director of Career Advising and Residency Services in supporting student applications to residency and the match process. Works actively in ERAS and NRMP systems and provides supervisory support throughout Match week.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and  key liaison between students and University and CUIMC offices, including, but not limited to the Office of Housing, Student Health on Haven, the Health Sciences Library team, and CUIMC Facilities. With the Associate Deans, participates in meetings with each of these campus partners and students to address and collaborate on relevant campus efforts and challenges.
  • Leverages technology for optimal administration of the VP&S Education website, inclusive of all Education programs. Serves as the Administrative liaison to the VP&S Office of Communication on all student-focused communication projects, i.e., student event and activity news and magazine pieces, events, medical student photo library, and new web content.
  • Advises Senior Associate Dean for Administration and Finance on VEC space usage and student needs. Directs management of medical student facilities including the student locker inventory, the VP&S Student Lounge access, and the VEC MD& PhD student lounge equipment. Coordinate with the Sr. Associate Dean on budget and financial planning for Student Affairs.
  • In partnership with the CUIMC Registrar and the Director of Curriculum, assists with student record keeping and degree conferral. Produces recurring and ad hoc student enrollment reports for various stakeholders and key national surveys. Innovates processes to improve efficiency.
  • Provides essential support for the Advisory Dean Program and the six advisory deans
  • Develops and provides oversight for the management of the “House” Program, including leadership of all House programming, related peer-to-peer mentoring programs, peer mentor trainings, and contributing to the ongoing growth of this important school initiative.
  • Takes an active part in efforts related to the Learning Environment at VP&S. Acts as a liaison between VP&S, Center for Education, Research and Evaluation (CERE), and the Senior Faculty Learning Environment Advisors (SFLEAs) and tracks reports, responses, and related communication. Participates in implementation and monitoring of new learning environment initiatives.
  • Responsive to students’ needs and assists Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Support & Services with student support and advising as appropriate Assist in counseling learners on personal, academic, and career issues and serving as a key liaison when appropriate professional support is needed on sensitive issues.
  • As needed, provides senior-level support for all special issues relating to student life and services including on-call coordination of student safety, security, or any other special or emergency circumstance.
  • Administers surveys, considers incentives, and produces subsequent data analysis to support the student life, academic and career advising needs of medical students.
  • Consider strategies of how student affair services can support students across VP&S inclusive of the MD, PhD, PT, OT, Genetic Counseling, and other master programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Available as needed to attend early morning, evening or weekend events based on seasonal activities. Due to the nature of the role, this position is typically not remote/hybrid.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalency in education and experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of related work experience
  • Expert knowledge of Student Affairs, preferably in a medical school or similar
  • Prior strong supervisory experience and the ability to work independently.
  • Interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills focused on establishing and maintaining productive relationships with students, faculty, peers, and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including strategic advancement and process management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills - the ability to interact effectively with students and all levels of faculty and staff is essential.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Student life, management, operations, and training experience.
  • A demonstrated commitment to expanding educational opportunities to all, and a history of working successfully with diverse populations of students and staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, accuracy, and an ability and willingness to learn new systems and programs.
  • Available as needed to attend early morning, evening, or weekend events based on seasonal activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Prior experience leading networking and student affairs events (in person and virtual)
  • The ability to motivate, professionally develop, and successfully manage a team
