Position Summary
The primary objective of Advancement at the Raymond A. Mason School of Business is to secure private funds for the School from alumni, corporations, and friends of the institution. The Senior Director of Advancement is responsible for outreach to their assigned portfolio of graduates, donors and prospects for the purpose of securing and stewarding leadership gifts to the School.
The Senior Director will be a member of the School’s Advancement leadership team and will be responsible for developing and executing a vision and philosophy for fundraising in higher education, increased giving and strengthening relationships with our alumni community. The Senior Director will develop and lead a team in conjunction with our ambitious advancement goals within their designated portfolio. The Senior Director will lead by example and will work closely with and mentor gift officers to ensure success for William & Mary’s fundraising efforts. The individual in this role serves as the point person and leader to plan and implement a focused strategy for the School’s principal, major, planned and leadership gift prospects in the assigned portfolio of programs. The individual will create, coordinate and implement thoughtful and donor-centric development strategies designed to reach the School’s most significant prospects within the their own portfolio as well as those who may be managed by other staff. Additionally, some donors will require playing the lead relationship role and with other donors will require a complex, behind the scenes coordination among academic leadership, other development officers, and volunteers.
The Senior Director will collaborate extensively with colleagues across campus, to ensure prospects are moved along the pipeline and up the gift pyramid. In addition, the Senior Director will direct the coordination of major gift prospects to the appropriate constituent area, allowing for the proper flow of prospects from discovery to solicitation to gift closure and stewardship. The Senior Director will exhibit a high level of independence and ability to work effectively and successfully with minimal supervision and a strong work ethic with a commitment to teamwork.
Conditions of Employment
• Subject to hours that extend beyond the normal work hours to include weekend, holiday work, and project requirements.
• This is a restricted position; continuation depends on continued availability of funding.

Required Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Significant and progressively responsible experience in academic fundraising or a related field.
• Proven ability to identify, qualify as well as cultivate prospective major gift donors, expertise in drafting and executing creative donor and prospect strategies, and the ability to solicit and secure significant private gifts.
• Demonstrated ability to develop a strategic vision to create and manage a team to harness the potential of the larger community toward engagement and philanthropic goals.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with a fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary gift opportunities
Strong managerial/organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple and complex tasks and projects concurrently.
Preferred Qualifications
• A Master’s degree.
• Previous management experience.
• Experience in higher education.
