Job Summary

Works on complex procurement assignments where analysis of situations or data requires a review of multiple purchasing options. Has authority to make purchases within broadly defined dollar limits. Exercises judgment to determine the most effective methodology to acquire common goods and services. Normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work, with general direction provided on purchasing assignments that are more complex or unique. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Department Description

UCSF Health’s Supply Chain Management Department includes a comprehensive set of services that continually strengthen the scope of our patient care. We leverage our cutting-edge technology to deliver pinpoint accuracy and drive costs out of the supply chain. We provide access to a broad range of medical-surgical products, lower on-hand inventories and freight costs, reduce supply chain labor, insure compliance with UC policies and manage expense by improving product utilization throughout our organization.  Above all else, however, we are committed to quality and customer service. We realize everything we do ultimately affects patient healing and wellness. We’re committed to delivering inventive, cutting-edge solutions to every aspect of the supply chain.  We employ the resources of a seasoned management team with a deep understanding of the intricacies of UCSF’s Supply Chain, as well as standard best practices utilized throughout the industry.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Five+ (5+) years of experience working in purchasing, supply chain, commodities, or procurement
  • Analytical skills are necessary to evaluate the quality and cost-effectiveness of multiple and complex purchasing options.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Strong level of proficiency in the use of standard spreadsheet and word processing software.
  • Relates favorably with others. Possesses experience/education/ability to use interpersonal skills necessary to develop cooperative working relationships within the purchasing function as well as a wide variety of UCSF Health personnel and suppliers.
  • Able to make sound and accurate judgments in normal as well as emergencies. Must treat all suppliers with equal justice. Must be tactful when dealing with suppliers and user departments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong skills in the use of ERP / financial systems (such as Oracle, PeopleSoft, SAP, Banner, etc.).
  • Knowledge of the organization's departments and operations is required to meet their procurement needs.
  • Ability to read and interpret terms and conditions of contracts.
  • Purchasing experience in a healthcare organization
