Job Summary

Under general guidance, the Senior Business Systems Analyst is responsible for performing a broad range of high-level business and technical analyses. This person is a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the field. Responsibilities include problem-solving that requires analysis of unique issues for the many Campus Life Services (CLS) business and administrative units (e.g. Transportation, Fitness and Recreation, Housing, Documents and Media, Retail Services, Conference Services, and Facilities). Some examples include the development of cost-saving initiatives, assisting with software evaluation gap analysis, maintenance of systems, and support of other unit objectives related to automation and streamlining of business processes.

This person applies advanced business analysis concepts to define highly complex systems' scope and objectives. They will be responsible for the full software development life cycle – developing business cases, developing scope documents, defining user requirements, coordinating implementation tasks, selection, installation, implementation, deployment, and support – across multiple CLS units.

Systems vary in complexity from low to extremely complex. The nature of work which includes projects, enhancements, and support addresses business-specific needs. It also requires collaboration with technical and business staff internal and external to CLS to integrate existing systems, convert legacy systems, and/or implement new systems.

This person is also responsible for supporting CLS in identifying opportunities for business process improvement through process re-engineering. The position plays a collaborative support role and uses expertise related to the management of complex processes and technical information. The Senior Business Systems Analyst is a functional application expert who has an in-depth knowledge of the applications and how they address customers’ needs, acts as the liaison between end-users, vendors, finance, and information technology services, and champions the end-user viewpoint throughout the full software development lifecycle.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF IT delivers a complete set of IT services and support for the enterprise and departmental IT units.  Services include infrastructure, network, security, analytics, integration, application, and customer support services.  These essential services support UCSF’s mission to care, heal, teach, and discover.
FAS Applications is a department within UCSF IT - Enterprise Systems and is committed to providing responsive and efficient professional services to its customer departments in support of their unique missions and goals.  The department is responsible for the strategic planning and the development of business and technology services capable of supporting a broad range of business needs and functions across campus and UCSF Health.  The incumbent develops integrated and cross-functional strategic solutions to solve business needs and ensures that such processes fit within applicable policies and regulations.  Business solutions are developed to assist operations units in meeting financial and operational objectives through economies of scale and procedural expertise.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and 5-10 years relevant experience/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Advanced knowledge of business and process analysis functions.
  • Advanced knowledge of related areas of IT.
  • Advanced skills and methodologies associated with process and software design, modification, and implementation.
  • Demonstrated skills needed to develop process and system implementation plans.
  • Understanding and skill in complex process and systems requirement documentation standards, such as Use Case modeling, User Story creations, and narrative description.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Demonstrates problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of business processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Interpersonal and communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Demonstrated skills in project management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge relating to the design of processes and software across the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience with process analysis, systems analysis, process architectures and systems analysis methodologies and practices including traditional waterfall, Agile, Agile Scrum, UML, UML Enterprise, et cetera.
  • Demonstrated skills in SQL query writing and programming.
